Default Computer question

Ok, so 2 of the 4 auto door locks stopped working.... (british, right?) and Lucas the prince of darkness has buggered the cruise control which worked last week...(again I am hoping for some bad wires at the plug as I was in the general area) but I have a "check Engine lgiht" question.

I have read that on the 88 rrc, I have to find the ecu and push a paperclip thru the whole under the sticker.

I looked under the seat, found the big 40 pin connected black box and looked all over for the "reset" hole to no end.

1. Is this the correct location/box on the 88
2. WHERE IS THE STUPID HOLE.......man that was a lesson in futility on my part.

The door locks are probably the actuators. Try cleaning them up first, but if that doesn't work then you'll need new ones cause they are not servicable.

The EFI light will come on for two reasons. 1) you have a fault "somewhere" in the fuel injection system, or 2) no reason at all.

Quick fix to reset the light is to disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes. If it stays off then i would go with reason number two. If it comes back on then its reason number one.

An 88 has the older 13CU type brain. You may get very lucky if a previous owner swapped in a 14CUX with a code display. If not, there are some test procedures you can do to try to isolate it that can be found here:

http://www.landrover.ee/est/varia/downloads/cars.htm

But with the old 13's your kindof chasing your tail. I've read that the two most common faults are the coolant temp sensor (not the one for the gauge) and the fuel temp sensor. The coolant is very cheap to replace - the temp, not so much so. Unfortunaetly this can end up being very frustrating since you don't have a display and you can't hook up a OBD scanner, and just randomly replacing parts can get very expensive. If it keeps doing it, then try to remember under what conditions the light comes on then come back here for some more help.

When I bought it, the Check engine light was not working. I was replacing the "dead switch" with a aux light switch when I found a hanging light in the dash, which was on...put 2 and 2 together and bingo. Now when that Aux light switch glows, I know the CE light is on.....

No display, just the black box. I'll try the battery, but it probably will come back on......

Like I said, its been on since I got her. If Siam is around, maybe he can enlighten me since he was the PO.

Thanks Greg, I'll try and may be back! By the way, looks like you have excellent taste in Rovers...

Thanks. I LOVE the cypress green. It has always been my favorite color of the range rovers. I have a surco rack as well, so except for your taller tires and different brush gaurd - very similiar trucks - and very handsome as well!! I have the original size tires because big tires + 3.5 + 3.54 gears + mountains = big pregnant dog (as you well know!)

Good luck with the light.

thats funny.....

My drivers door and my rear rear, right side passenger door open with the auto locks....they all did about a month ago.

The rear door that the lock works on wouldn't open the other day from the inside. Weird as hell. Maybe it is all related? I have to pull all the door panels off and take a look. Not looknig forward to that...

they all open from outside, for now.....

Yeah Greg, big pregnant dog....with the 2.25 ome and those 265/75 truxis mt's, I have to get out a push up the hill to tahoe...I understand. But it looks mean! Mine was repainted, so I am not sure of original color, but green she is today.

Take a look at this link regarding the "check engine" light (as opposed to the "service engine" light):

CJH, so as I read that, I simply turn on car, unhook the 40 pin, wait 5 sec and reconnect.....then it should go off? I may have to do it 100 times, but I 'll take a shot since it is easy to get to.

Is that for the '88s becuase it seems to indicate that that is what you do to the 90-95's...

Now I have 2 things to try...

32's huh?! wow. Tahoe must be a bitch! you see thats the problem with most rovers and big tires but especially the 3.5. Unless you're willing to make some gearing changes, its pregnant dog city. But, the way i see it - with the articulation, some driving skills, and where i take my rover, i can't see putting on bigger tires anyway. But hey, like you say, at least it looks mean.

They are what I got the RRC with....and I will tell you, when I am crawling up rocks, they stick to everything....And at like $140 a tire, around here that is not too big a deal...my s10 blazer's run $95 and they are 235/75/15's.

I am not sure if I would have gone so big, but when I am off in the dirt, they work great...the road, pregnant puppy after dinner...

However, in the Mt. Bike world they argue how a 29" tire rolls better over trails than a26" tire (and from my experience, it flows better) and my Chevy vs. the Rover, the rover maintains speed over the trail better as it is less hampered by the littler stuff.

West Coast Brit said they can do a transfer case gear change for me.....increase my highway speeds...but off road, she is wonderful.

Well see what I think when its time to repalce them......maybe a little smaller, a little taller who knows.

Greg..maybe someday I'll get up your way and we can have a Green Rover Get together....

I hear ya. Sounds like she likes how the shoes fit on the trail anyway. Come on up some time. I don't board but I ski. Tamarack has a wicked terrain park for you.

No terrain park for me...I am 275#, 36 and run either a 168 wide or a 180 Burton....send me out into the deep pow and some trees....Only time I slide or fly is not always by choice. I learned to ski when I was 4 or 5, soon as we moved from Hawaii...I started boarding for the stance/carve...the flow I guess. I am always looking for the flowing lines ala Warren Miller, not wings.....I guess that was the longboard surfer in me.... But someday, I will pack up the Rover and point the nose north... (see Rover reference, still on topic)

No kidding

I think of myself as a large land mammal.....but let me tell you, when you want that Rover out of a tight spot, I am the man to talk too....

Thankfully I look less like an elephant and more like a linebacker, but if I can get my legs into the push, cr@$ moves!
