Default custom fuel filter setup..

so I stripped the forward nut on the union where it meets the fuel filter so I decided to hack into the metal line in front and behind the filter about 3 inches both sides, and for the new filter, I used some plumbing hardware, a 3/8 inch to 1/2 piece, and then a 1/2 inch piece threads into that to hook up some rubber hose. the first problem i had is the fuel leaking at the threads, so I guess I'll get some thread sealant but my question is will unleaded gas deteriorate the sealant when its cured in the threads? I know that I need to get fuel grade rubber hose but I only have access to hydraulic hose and also was wondering if that will work.
