My engine keeps cutting out around 3000 rpm's.
This is not a "spot" on the throttle like a TPS bad spot. For example, whenever i climb a hill on the highway, if i drop it into a lower gear, and i hold the same throttle settings, its fine until about 3K, then it jerks and bucks like its not getting gas. Ideas? Distributor missing a beat? Fuel pressure?

ignition coil - i had an old 64 tbird that behaved the exact same way, the coil couldn't handle higher RPM's - and it started all of a sudden

You may have eliminated the TPS by reproducing the failure point in different gears, but it's so easy to check with an analog meter, do it anyway.
I'm not so sure about the coil but it does have an ignition sound to it. I would be looking at the pickup coil, amplifier, and coil as a system, and rule out each of the three components individually. Best way to do it is with a scope, looking at the firing of the amplifier, but if you don't have a good DC scope, it's hard to look at the pickup coil pulses, or the amplifier switching pattern. A meter, analog or digital is too slow to react the the pulse. Hate to say it, but R&R method may the simplest way. |

Thanks guys. The TPS does have a pretty good bounce on the meter, but its only when its full to the floor throttle. This happens at about 3/4 throttle and right around that 3000 mark.
The coil is a crane cams high output job that was on it when i bought it. I won't rule that out, but its less likely to be a culprit than the original. Pickup coil and amplifier are certainly possibilties. my amplifier is still in the original location. Go idea Terry, I'll probably end up taking it in to someone that still has a scope and have them look at it. In the meantime, I am getting her loaded up for fly fishing trip, so gotta go!! ![]()

When I bought my 93, the PO told me he had the exact same problems. He replaced plugs, wires.....then distributor/cap/rotor...... then coil....finaly found out it was the alternator.....
He said that when tested it was fin, but under a load, it just wouldn't work right. Replaced, and still is working fine!![]()

In the flipping creek!! I caught a few 8" inchers but nothing to write home about. Silver Creek is pretty famous fly water, so it gets quite a bit of pressure. Spooky fish, long leaders, and tiny flies make for some challenging fishing for sure. I like to consider myself a fairly good fly fisher, but I couldn't get a big boy to rise to save my life.
