Default Is cutting the muffler off a bad idea?

Mine hangs down too much, and I think I will end up ripping it off! Will it affect back pressure if I do this. I have supplied a picture so you can see what I mean! Thanks!

When I bought my RRC a few years ago that part of the exhaust was not there. I do not thank it has had an impact.

can u just hook it up on the muffler bracket or just tie it up some how? in the pic there is that steel tie up w/ holes (can't think of the name). if u cut it off it might get loud and do u have any state laws about mufflers?

mine is cut off right after that last hanger. It felt faster 0-60, but that could be just because of the sound.

If your talking about the rear mufler, YEs ! Its not going to hurt anything and it might sound a little beefier but not loud at all. you can re use you turndown tip to keep the clean look if you can tack it on.

I ripped my off up in the hills two years ago and have yet to do anything about it. Doesn't feel faster, hardly louder too. Now...the cracked exhaust header that also happened when I ripped the muffler off...that's a different story. I should probably get that fixed...

I can send you pictures if you like...it's funny seeing yours and seeing what I've been missing for a few years.

I mean to say it is bracketed in that way. It cannot move. I can tell the PO did something bad to the exhaust system. The pipe is crimped, and twisted in some spots, and apperently he had an exhaust shop bend it back, and just weld a cheap muffler on. It looks terrible, and is in a bad position, I just want to cut it off, and connect a strait pipe, and make it higher. Thanks for the input people, I will just cut it off!

Believe it or not, there is such a device called an Exhaust Backpressure guage. SOunds funny, but I have used these things before.

If you have no backpressure, it can create a sight hesitation, unless you're timing is advanced a bit. That's why when I put the glasspack on my exhaust, in place of the huge muffler in the center, and hacked the rear resonator, like the one shown in the above pic, my timing needed some adjusting. I am willing to bet that when I did the exhaust on my truck, the back pressure went from like 5 psi, to like 2-3 psi. No psi, is bad, not good for a daily driver. Too much, you have clogged cats, and/or muffler(s).

Either way, I did the exhaust, just messin' with sound and backpressure, and all-in-all, my truck has better running performance, and I have tested my truck at college with a 5 gas analyzer, and my truck passed emissions.

My hung down to low also, cut it off and put in a 90degree elbow. I have not noticed any change in performance other than it got a little more of a grumble to it.

Dude.....I like that, I had thought of a "turn-down", but not out of the side. I will do that!!!

Be careful when putting it out the side so that it does not stick out past the quarter panel. Otherwise you are likely to ram it up through the quarter panel if going over steps off-road

i positioned it as close as i could to the inside of the wheel well. That tire in full compression wont touch the exhuast but it gets close and its so tucked up in there i would have to drop that rear tire off a 90 vertical with zero forward velocity in order to bump it. Its a very out of the way spot, much better than the factory set up.
