hey all rover dead...typical no start i need some ideas...as it cold and raining out so im trying to not get every jacket i own soaking wet while workin on this.... ok heres what we have 91 gde aka a 90....been haveing cold hard start issues.. nothing major just cranks a little longer then fires idles high then settles down around 800 or soo.... with a very strong fuel smell out the exhaust even after warm up.. i went out yesterday the first day that it has been above 35 40f out in the am and started the truck fired up the sputtered...and died and no start every since.... checked plugs were very worn and gas soaked bad...checked the leads all good there minimal resistance there and look some what new...checked cap heavly corroded polls inside cheap tin cap not a good brass one... checked steper valve and cleaned it wassnt bad at all looks some what new.....check all vaccum line...put in new champion plugs got a sputter after long crank...pulled them out gas washed again... put in ngk plugs same thing long crank with a sputter... checked spark seams very weak to weak to be honest.... now heres the thing im thinking bad coolant temp sensor makes it run rich ...when it was super cold out no big issue becouse it needs the extra fuel to run... but now thats its not super cold out its gas washing the pistons... andhaveing a weak coil isnt helping to light off the extra gas....soo please if there are any other mechanics out here helpa brother out....cannt just keep throwing parts at this thing..... sorry for the long post i just hate it when people have a peoblem with there cars and dont give any info...thanks Don

Don,
A faulty temp sensor will definitely cause the truck to run rich. YOu might want to swap yours with another snesor, clean the plugs and try again. If you don't have access to another sensor let me know and I can send up one to see if it will help. Cheers, Paul |

No problem. I'm glad you got it sorted out. I was talking with Kevin when I was reading your post and we both thought that the temp sensor could be causing it to run too rich. Anyway, if you ever need an oddball part like a sensor just to troubleshoot let me know and if I have what you need I can always get it to you quickly.
