Default defroster/blower

alright first off its a 93' 3.9.... my fan speed only works on high and AC setting only.... all other settings it doesnt blow at all or just very little. when it is on it makes a "burning smokin rubber" smell. and it doesnt blow hot air... at all... oh and at one point i had snow comming through the vents. i know the ac's cold but not that cold! any suggestions? i personally think it could have been a rat that ate a hole through something hence the snow comming it and maybe its nest is blocking something..... OH!!! one more strange thing... i had my hose from my maf fall off and it was bogging down really bad so i opend it up and found the loose hose put it back on and it ran great... well today when i tried the heat again (while the cars in motion) it started to get all boggy and weird like it did with the hose off... turned the heat off and it ran great. any suggestions before i go pulling all my vents apart???

I wish I had sage like advice for you but mine decided to sound like I put a baseball card in the bike spokes on the way home tonight so I might be tearing apart 2 dashes this weekend to make sure we have heat for the trip

Heater Fan Resistor Pack

A common problem is for the fan to only work on high (III) setting. The most likely cause is the blower speed control resistor going bad. David Corcoran reports that the part looks like a cigar and you can see it if you look through the plastic grills on your hood (or take them out to see). It sits on the firewall and you can't get to it unless you remove the decker panel which is a lot of work. (Accordingly, it can cost several hundred dollars of labor to get the dealer to fix it). The part itself is inexpensive (on a 1990 RR the part number is PRC 8010, and costs about $40).
Quoted from RR Remedies....

anyone done this before? is it close to the heater core? guess i might as well change that while i'm at it if its close... sounds like all the work is getting to it.

it can be done without pulling the decker! there are 2 screws, one at each end of the cigar. remove the cowell vents and the 2 screws, It aint no picnic, but it can be done.
the plug is on the other side of the firewall.
to access the plug, remove the dash vent wood& rt lower dash panel. reach in below the oh shit bar/handle. the plug is burried in there and often ziptied in placed. it is highly recomended to replace the resistor as the motor life is drasticly reduced when on high. the bearings dont like it. I got a great deal on one used from grampas retired rovers.
good luck!

remember mine only works on ac and III setting.... ??? and whats "air locked" saw that somewhere, sounded like a fun problem to have, maybe i'll get it for christmas... actually i think i want a couple of broked axles maybe a dysfunctional MAF or a few rat nests to go with it. hahaha.... i know i know i know. its a rover thing

thats a pretty wild looking resister. i imagine since its no longer air cooled, it can be mounted behind the dash, and you wouldn't have to worry about removing the old one.
however you make a good point about it only worcking in a/c mode. there are 2 different motors 1 at the evaporator core for the a/c and 1 at the heater core for the heat. i lost power to my heater motor in me 93 lwb and after pulling lots of hair i found mass GREEN corrosion on the positive batt cable about 10'' away from the batt. you will find about 10 16GA. wires spicing in there. if you see ANY GREEN in there replace the connection. its amazing how many things started to work again that i blew off after i fixed it. including my heater!

so if it works when its on ac and not on heat then its definatly my heater motor thats not working.... becuase of either resistors, corrosion, or a beat blower motor.... sorry i'm just tryin to narrow this down as much as possible. cant be that hard, its just an electric motor and resistors.... anything else that can fail? for some reason i feel like the contacts that change the speed of the blower are dirty.... hummmm... where do i starttttt?

i found most of what i needed out of the schmatic in my owners man. pm me if you need and i'll fax it to you Mon. start at fusse C9 30a if fuse is good than check if you have pwr to it as well as fuse E3 10a under rear of pass seat. from there it goes to the hvac load relay ''rt kick pnl'' if good so far, then go to the fan speed switch. after that the resister then it looks like there is another relay last the motor thats a lot but its right off the schmatic. i was lucky and found no pwr to the 10a fuse thats when i found Mr. Green growing in that pos wire replacing it fixed everything pm me if you need the locations and i'll get them to you tom.or mon.
