Default diagnostic code 44

i hava a 94 range rover lwb...my onboard diagnostic display showed 44 which is the left oxygen sensor but iv also heard that code 44 can mean that the engine is running rich...my MAF sensor is just about dead and im wondering if this would cause a code 44? or mayb i need to replace the MAF sensor and the oxygen sensors...

How's your gas mileage?
If you've noticed it's dropped off you should replace the O2 sensors anyway.
So maybe if you're looking for justification....

How bad would the two O2 sensors on a 4.2 affect the MPG's of the Rover? Cause I get about an average now of around 13 maybe 15 MPG on the freeway, and maybe something else is contributing to the thing.

My 1993 LWB went from 14.5-15.5 to 12.
So I'm gonna replace them this summer.

How much do you think brand new ones would cost?

I'll have to look them up. They are under 150$(US) each if I remember correctly.

How do they affect the gas mileage?
They control the richness of your mixture if I understand it correctly. Older sensors give the computer readings that cause it to run richer. Which is why you see a drop in mileage.
OF course I could be wrong. But when I replace mine my mileage goes up.

Bought two just now.
Tell them Eric Stephens sent you.
I won't get anything for it...but at least they'll know we talk about them.

If it was me i would replace the bad sensor, not both. Nathan at Discount Rovers used to sell them for 95 bucks but I cant find his website? Did he go out of business? Anyway, when the EFI kicks a code the ECU goes into full rich mode and gas mileage goes down the drain. My stock RRC in top shape gets 16 hwy running premium fuel. Gordo

Nathan's new website is: http://www.discountbritishparts.com/

The new URL doesn't seem to be well-known yet - I was looking this up a few weeks ago, and it took me ages! Nathan seems to have a great reputation, especially when it comes to the oxygen sensors!

disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and reconnect. it should show an 02 which will clear up. If the 44 comes back then something else is the culprit but I bet you will be okay. Hopefully you know your radio code! gordo

If you have over 100,000 miles on the truck, you should have replaced both O2 sensors. No since have one bank at proper fuel mixures and the other at a rich setting. It is kind of lake replacing one brake pad and not the other to save money.

Ryan. I'm not sure if you've seen my page but it has a bunch of stuff you may run into owning your Classic.
Check it out. I sometimes make the false assumption every one has done "this or that" like clearing the codes by unplugging the battery.

Don't put off changing that other O2 sensor. Try to get it in there within a month if possible.
