Default Direct-fit Alternator Conversion - pics inside

Posted this over at rangerovers.net...Thought someone over here might benefit as well....

So I Finally gave up on the '93 rangie's alternator. Voltage output was fluctuating with all the symptoms. I decided to stick-it to Sir Lucas and convert to something more plentiful and less expensive. I didn't want to have to mod any of the mounting brackets, or create my own. Long story short, after a lot of research, the CS130 type alternator from a 97 Saturn SW1 fits the range rover with no bracket modifications necessary. The only adjustment that needs to be made is the front alternator housing needs to be rotated 90 degrees in respect to the rear housing. The wiring is straight forward - a pigtail will need to be sourced with all 4 wires (some have 3, some have 2) and spliced into the rangie's loom. I sourced a 4-groove pulley to be compatible with the '93's serp-belt and was done with the conversion in less than 30 min.

Got the alt from - 100 Amp Alternator Conversion for MG Triumph and all Lucas equipped cars ... but any local parts place should work.

Front View comparison

Lower mount comparison

Pigtail wiring -
Connect main rangie alternator wire to + lug on rear of housing (where #2 is)
#3 connects to the brown/yellow ignition light wire.
#4 grey goes to white tach signal wire
#4 brown is not used

Installed:

this is awesome, i don't have to worry about when my 100k+ alt goes out i won't be out 350 bucks! it seems like the kit on the website is a good deal in terms of getting the plugs and pully already included, I would think you might be able to reuse the old pulley on the new alt? were did you get the pulley and pigtails from and how much did this cost you to do yourself?

cost was ~$145 but prob could have been less if i just went to NAPA or autozone.

Lessons Learned:

The old Lucas serp belt pully should fit the new alternator. I decided to get a new 4-groove pulley designed to fit GM alternators. Found it on alternatorparts.com for $15.

The alternator kit from mgcars includes pigtail and v-belt pulley (good for pre-'93) and the alternator housing has already is pre-rotated 90degrees. This means the alt front housing has been rotated 90degrees in respect to the rear. This puts all the mounting points in the correct position. You will have to do this if you buy the saturn alternator from a parts place. Also the pigtail provided does NOT have the tach wire. I was able to use some stuff i had around to make it work. I think the entire setup could be done for about $110 assuming the alternator is around $95 and the pigtail is $15.

Also you can bump the price a bit if you want to go higher amperage. There are high output CS130 units as well as high amperage kits for them. The highest I've seen are 140-160 amp.

You can also use the alternator from a '92 toyota landcruiser. Direct bolt-on, the only mod's necessary is to change the pully. dan

Army, looks like the reman 90 amp TOY alt from Autozone is part #14958 (with internal fan) for $127.99 with a $55 core.

I can get Magneti Marelli (OEM LR) for $165 no core charge.
