UPDATE
So, I got the Driveshaft (Thank you Paul Grant!). I crawled under her today to check out everything. The Transfer case end is clear and has all 4 screws still attached to it, just no driveshaft, but the other end, near the front axle, still has the rotating part of the driveshaft still on there (confirmed, it did "break" off. It looks like the driveshaft must have twisted until it broke off.) I took off 2 of the 4 bolts that are attaching the broken piece, and am having trouble getting the other 2 off. They are on there pretty tight. The front axle end rotates and moves the vehicle's front wheels back and forth. On a side note. Near the front axle on the passenger side, right next to the driveshaft, there is a wheel, or pulley looking device, that has two ends of cable coming out of it. both pieces of cable have torn and are hanging loose. What is this wheel, and is it something dangerous along the lines of needing immediate attention? Thanks again guys! |

Symptoms:
Smoke/burning smell coming from transfer case. Metallic Clicking while making a left or right turn, both in drive and reverse. Any guesses? I'm going to take it to the dealer to look at it In the meantime I took the front drive shaft back out, because I don't want to damage either the front shaft, rear shaft, or transfer case any further. appreciate any help... |

the clicking noise depending on were it's coming from could be one of two things.
Bad cv's on the front axle or a blown vc unit.

This is a classic problem for that era rover. Scenario goes like this; front tires start chirping on tight corners, really noticeable in parking lots. Viscous coupler has failed, or failing (locking up). Viscous coupler is a wear part, just expensive. So to postpone the repair cost, just remove the front shaft for a while.
When you do replace the coupler make sure to also replace the bearing with it. |
