I would suggest you first do an engine flush to clean up some of the internals, then do a manual oil pressure test followed by dropping the pan for a full inspection.
In the mean time I wouldn't be driving it, could just make the problems worse. By the way, how many miles on the engine? Mike |

I know you are trying to keep your image as the biggest ass on the site, but it does get old after awhile.
There is no doubt that you have some good knowledge regarding Rovers but that doesn't mean you are the all knowing and everybody else is wrong, I doubt it. Mike |

How can Anyone possibly diag a noise without hearing it? Do you think a Rod knock is going to be described differently then pre-ignition? Maybe his distributor is stuck and not advancing...That will cause a knock under load. If it is....He sure wasted time taking off the pan and pulling off a bearing cap....
Or, maybe he just got a tank of shitty gas.... Droping his pan isnt goign to determine that. Or, maybe its something belt driven. Or maybe a torque convertor bolt came off and its rattling around the flywheel (Seen it) It he hunts down our best guesses wihtout hearing it, he is going to waste time, confidence in himself and money. Why not take it in and have it indentified quickly by someone who can do it? This isnt how you ran your shop, is it? |

my 95lwb (118k miles) does the same thing, not radical or seriously detrimental, but annoying. I run a bottle of techron through it every 3000 miles( oil changes) and use high octane fuel whenever I expect to be running the air or climbing out of the valley with air. This seems to keep it under control, but I really expect the timing, air gap and plugs need to be changed. try some stuff and post how it works. good luck geneo |

try and locate the area where the sound is coming from, to get a better idea of what may be producing it.
buy a long prob stethoscope or a long metal rod and have some one in the truck start the engine and have them rev it up everynow and then, while you prob the engine in several areas by placing the rod or scope againest the heads and manifold, ect and listen for a knocking or heavy tapping when under heavy accleration. saftey warning, make sure not to stick anything in the area for anything moving like belts, fans ect, be careful of ignition wires, hot manifold, and if using a metal rod, make sure it is too large to go into ear. |
