Is there a sound associated with this, or is it only "felt"? Possibly a harmonic balancer (up front on end of crankshaft)?? Does this vibration start after it's warmed up...or right from start up?

there's not an engine in the world that doesn't vibrate at 2-3 thousand rpms.

if its accompanied by a metallic noise you have trouble.
otherwise i'd try to dampen the vibration by tightening the mounts. or replacing them if the rubbers shot.

anything can cause a "vibration" : if the engine is misfiring... if one bank is running leaner than the other(o2 sensor), if one exhaust manifold is leaking and creating less back pressure than the other . it could be something as simple as fouled injectors , just going through and replacing hundreds of parts unfortunately does not neccesarily solve the problem, you need to find another clue.
what else besides "vibration"?.... you are only noticing it at idle more than when driving because the momentum of the moving vehicle pulls the engine through the "mis" and it is less noticeable. it sounds like an ignition miss maybe. take it out where it is pitch black and lift the hood while it is running, look for arching, cross-firing or grounding from the wires and distributor , you may just need a new dist cap or to re route some wires , maybe a wire came partially loose at the connector...

Check the engine (radiator) fan and water pump. Fans can go brittle and bits break off. The bits missing cause the fan to be out of balance and puts a viabration through the whole motor.
