Default failed oil pressure light

Greetings, we have recently purchased the 87 RR Classic and are bugging it out slowly but surely. The gauge set has some points that have failed, number one problem is the oil sensor light. I think I read somewhere that the gauge reads to ground to set the light on. I have jumped the lead to earth and no results on the bulb end. Any ideas on the normal problem associated with this light not working?
