Fresh air coming in from the A/C - Land Rovers Only

I have fresh air coming in from the a/c eventhough the recirculate is activated. has anyone experienced this?

Going to need a little more info to help you out on this one ! Have you got a owners maual ? You may have the vent open ?

sorry about that. i have a 1995 LWB. i've got the vent settings to go thru the front vents and i have the recirculate button activated. somehow, smell (ex. smoke) manages to come in the cabin when I pass by certain areas.

There is a black ball on the drivers side of the truck under the hood, its a vacuum reservoir (how can you have something that holds nothing???) for the HVAC system. There should be a vacuum line running from the manifold to the ball and then one from the ball into the firewall - check those hoses for leaks or disconnections - the recirc/fresh air flap is vacuum driven - and that ball is the source of vacuum for the whole system, I knocked one of those hoses off my truck when working and I had the exact same problem as you - the fresh air flap stayed open...

thanks steve, i'll try to check on those hoses. i was going thru a workshop manual and it mentions something about a servo that regulates the flaps by the back of the glove compartment. do you think that has some connection too?

Most modern cars will still have 10-20% fresh air flow while the HVAC system is set to Recirculate. This has been done since the 1960's to decrease the chance that carbon monoxide will build up inside a car. Some modern cars with electronic controls completely close the fresh air intakes, but gulp a little fresh air every few minutes, like my BMW. Older designs simply don't allow a complete closure of the fresh air intake, like GM and Ford cars. If you find nothing wrong with the vacuum reservoir or its vacuum lines, then you can suspect that not sealing may be a safety feature.

That servo (fresh air inlet) gets its vacuum feed via that reservoir under the hood - there are still other things that might be wrong - ie the servo might be bad (rotten diaphram), the valve that opens the vacuum feed to the servo, the eletrical connection to the valve etc. But for me, it was a simple case of hose being old and hard and it just fell off the connection too easily - so no vacuum, no recirc. mode.

Now I just realized you have a 95, mine is a 92 and I know that the 95's share a lot of dash components from the disco I, so my advice might not apply......

That's what I was thinking too Steve...that is more like the disco I than our pre-95 Rangies.

hi steve, i found that ball that you were talking about however I can only see metal pipings on it. I can't seem to see any vacuum hoses attached to it. I will also try checking the servo. I believe this is behind the glove compartment? thanks

Yeah, I'm afraid that your 95 HVAC doesn't have much in common with our earlier RRC's - you might cross post to the D1 area, those guys might know more about it. Just in case, this is the black ball I was referring to, if you look close you will see two hoses coming out of it, one back to the intake manifold and one runs off to the firewall....
