Fuel overflowing..

I filled the tank the other day, drove 10 miles or so. The next day I smelled a little gas around teh truck, got inside smelled gas. Looked around, didn't see anything obvious. Looked at teh fittings at the tank the best i could in school clothes, nothing obvious again. I open the gas tank, and gas pours out for a second and then levels off. The truck was on level ground. I don't click teh pump to get extra in.. Is there somehow that it was overfilled and created an air pocket or something? Drove it for an hour it was fine and hasn't done it since.

Could I have gotten a line wrong on teh tank that would do this? I am pretty sure I got everything where it should be. I guess all i can do is fill it again and see if it reoccurs?

any ideas? I can't remember if thers a breather on teh neck, would it just be that?

I don't remember if this is the first time I have filled the tank completely since I removed the tank to fix the fuel pump.

2 possibilities come to mind. One my be more likely if you have a newer, plastic tank. Was that particular day much warmer than many in the recent past? The fuel could easily have been ground temp (roughly 55F) and as it warmed up, in this recent warm wx we have been having, expanded.

Second possibility is that your evaporative solinoid valve (mounted atop or near your charcoal canister) is not cycling. It is supposed to cycle periodicly to draw vapors from the tank into the plenum. This compensates for the returning fuel to the tank via the line from fuel pressure regulator to tank.
The system is not vented. In fact no car made (imported to or made in the US) in the last 15 years has a vented fuel system.

You know, I didn't even think about the temperature issue. Sure enough I filled it when it was around 30 degrees, and it was 55-60 degrees when it over flowed.. maybe? still it seems a little strange but maybe.

Is that valve the little piece witha vacuum line that mounts on a bracket just towards teh engine side of the charcoal cannister? amazing after parting 2 trucks and rebuilding two I don't knwo what every part is yet. Maybe I'll see if i have one around and swap it out.
