Alrighty, so I have read all of the wonderful posts about No drive from D, 3, 2, but Moving in 1 and reverse. I get assumptive, drop the pan, change the filter, new fluid, etc. etc. Now I don't move unless I'm in reverse. It want's to, just doesnt have enough even in 4x4 low...I have line pressure, so after my reads, and a few looks at alldata I'm into the tranny again. I bought the overhaul kit from Mostly British, and am going to start the overhaul...Here's the kicker...I drain the Transfer case, and the fluid is Jet Black. Any Idea's if that's gonna bind me up enough not to move.

Try jacking up one wheel and see.
If you take the motor up to 1500rpm to 2000rpm with it in gear, does the motor start to stall. If it does, it shows that the thing is trying to drive and something is stopping it. |

No matter what, black fluid coming from the trans is a very, very bad thing.

Okay...I am EXTREMELY familiar with the ZF4HP22...I bought my LWB with a blown tranny (no forward motion, only reverse). What has happened is a pair of steel seals have worn and allowed high pressure into the first gear clutch pack. However, if your fluid is as dark as you say than more than just the first gear clutches are gone. I bought a Master rebuild kit ($230) to make sure that I had everything I was going to need. It is not too bad to rebuild...just take your time and keep everything clean and organized. You will want to check all the gear packs for worn clutches...more than just my 1st gear was worn, and my fluid was only dark red.
Here's a link to check out: ZF 4HP22 repair / rebuild info Also, the factory service manual (pre 95) does a good job of breaking it down. If you need the PDF of it PM me. Good luck, and ask lots of questions. BD

Started the teardown today...Definitely in the "A" Clutch. Has anyone else noticed that the Transfer box weights a metric ton?
I have the luxury of a lift and air tools too...Can't imagine how those fellas on the rebuild links did it.

Um...yeah. Been there, done that - good workout. Really don't want to do it again but then again, I have a thing for automotive basket cases!
