Beyond punching the trip meter between fill-ups and some loose mental math, I dont keep too careful track of my MPG. A single fillup will get me from Plano to Baytown and back to Conroe (with a little bumping around while visiting )before another fillup is needed for the trip back home. Bear in mind its flat, flat, flat..and downhill

The little orange "you better get some gas" light comes on when I go uphill when my trip odometer gets to about 190 miles. On level ground it starts lighting up at about 200 to 205 miles. I don't thinkl I've driven more than 210 miles on a tank of gas.
That's mixed driving around town and up on the interstate. I think I'm in the 12 mpg range.

Thats where I sit, about 200 miles on a tank before the light comes one, I'm also in the 12 MPG range, although thats up from 10 MPG before I replaced the vacuum advance.....

I usually get now around 300 miles to the tank, and that is pushing that"E" light on the guage. I tread lightly with my truck to keep the mileage this way. I honestly wouldn't have the mileage I get right now, any other way than up. I like the mileage I get. Then again, with gas prices now reaching the $3.50 mark for Premium, it doesn't seem like much. This is why I am looking for a motorcycle, and get my license and use it to go around town, and save the truck for weekend fun.

Abraham,
When dealing with EFI vehicles I like to use Red Line Fuel Injector Cleaner. You might be able to track it down at Auto Zone. Advance Auto used to carry it in my neck of the woods (you'll understand that pun) but they haven't had it lately. When I've used it in the past I've seen a slight improvement in mileage. I do like Seafoam on my carburetted truck but I honestly can't say I seen any improvements in economy. Four barrels sound great when you floor it but they suck fuel like mad. I would think that you should be seeing around 12-13 mpg on average and that includes some highway driving in the mix. When the truck was brand new the EPA rated it's efficiency at 13 mpg in town with 16 mpg on the highway. In most cases, especially back in those days, EPA estimates were taken with a grain of salt and usually considered optimistic at the very least. Now, you're 14 years down the road and with wear and tear I think expecting any more than what the EPA estimated when the truck was new is a bit unrealistic. As far as maximizing your fuel economy you have to check to make sure that your engine's state of tune is good overall. You didn't say what your timing was set for. I think Land Rover recommends 6 degrees BTDC IIRC). Check to make sure there are no vacuum leaks, that the plugs are clean and gapped properly, the injectors aren't leaking, the tires are properly inflated, ect. Follow the trail of your fuel to inspect for any irregularities. Continue to use 93 octane as that is what Land Rover specified for your truck. If you want to drive yourself crazy put a vacuum gauge in the dash and learn how to drive maximizing vacuum! Cheers, Paul |

Sea foam, is that some sort of fuel additive available in the US ? Because where I grew up it was the scummy mess found on the beach and in harbours containing dead fish, seaweed, newspaper, beer cans and used johnnys ! and I dont think that could improve MPG on anything.

Seafoam is a company that's been around for years. They make a variety of automotive products, mainly additives and cleaners. Take a look:
http://www.seafoamsales.com/products.htm As I said in my post above, I prefer Red Line Injector Cleaner for EFI trucks. You can see it here: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...part=red-60103 And read about it here: www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/15.pdf |

Just to add confusion. on 285/75r16 I get 250/tank driving in suburbia. Haven't tested on the highway enough to know... hopefully I'll have some miles/tank highway numbers from the offroad season this year.

Yep, I like the Red Line Injector Cleaner too. But I think I will be giving the "Sea Foam" a miss anyway ( bad childhood horror story). On a side note, Who the hell thinks up the names for this stuff anyway ?
