Default Guess the Issue!

Learned Rover Colleagues,

The Subject: 95 Classic LWB
Location: Eastern PA
The Problem: Tach started to bounce, then dropped to zero. I though my serpentine belt had broken, but I was very close to home and limped back. Oddly, the belt would start squealing then engage, and the tach would jump back up.

By the time I got home, temp gauge in the red, coolant dripping down, and cold air from the heater vents. The belt is in one piece and in good condition.

The Solution?: What could it be? Water pump froze up?

Thanks for your help.

Confirm everything is spinning ok. I bet you are going to find a pulley, likely the water pump one, binding up.

The tach is run off yoru alternator as you know.

Elemental,

Thanks, Dawg!

Does this mean the water pump may be fine, but that just the pulley needs replacing?

Sadly no.
I think the water pump is locking up.
Without the belts on does the water pump "feel" right? Does it spin?
You got an issue there.
Trace all the pulleys and check all the rotating bits in there, one of them is locking up and I'll bet it's the water pump.
