Default head compatability

Will heads from a 4L 97 disco1 work on the block of a 1990 RRC 3.9?
One has 8 bolts one 12

It will fit as far as I know. But I'm pretty sure the disco has 10 bolts and the range rover 14. You can omit the outer row of bolts without problems, and you should replace the metal gasket with a composite one.

You can use the heads off the Disco but make sure you use the composite gasket and you absolutely must get new head bolts. Call Rovers North and they'll set you up with everything you need.

You only need to replace the bolts if the use once type bolts have been used previously. Rather than replace them with the same bolts, you are a lot better off changing to studs.

New head bolts are cheap insurance, just change them anyway. You can not tell how many times they have been torqued or over torqued before just by looking at them. Head studs have a more even rate of stretch, thus a more even clampload and are alot stonger. Head studs are only realy required on high compression engines (like race engines). Having said that, if it was me I would upgrade to the studs. Not a fantastic price difference and why not make it better than it was since you have the heads off anyway.

Using studs on Rover motors reduces the risk of blowing a head gasket and rear coolant leak.
