Default headliner removal

has anyone ever removed the headliner of their RRC?.... not for replacement, but just left it off? My project 88 has a bad headliner and I dont want to pay to get it fixed, I just want to rip the whole thing out.

Will the son visors, rear view mirror, or over head light have a place to mount if the headliner is gone? Does anyone have any pictures of this mod?

Do a search on headliners and you should find a few posts on the subject. I removed my headliner and painted it with garage floor paint (white). Came out real nice. I posted some pics on one of the posts.

Here, I found the thread Headliner & Sunroof Repair Central Florida

It's not expensive to fix.
Check out my page on that.

It's easy.

Did you remove the headliner , including the foam and the cloth, or did you just peel the cloth off and paint the plastic/foam piece? I assume you painted the foam/plastic piece... If so, did you strip the foam fibers from the headliner off first? mine had a bunch of o range crap under the cloth.

I peeled off the fabric then vacummed the glue. I did not get a smooth surface (some of the glue just smudged onto the foam) but it did give it a nice textured look (kinda matches my herculined floors). If you get it dirty or he kids draw on it you can just paint it again. I did use a full gallon (6 layers) of the garage floor paint (Lowe's). I think it was a Beahr brand or something like that.

It is the backer that is my problem, not the cloth. It is sagging, but the cloth is still stuck fine.

my healiner sags prety low in my RRC as well, it doesn't mess with my vision out the back window, but I really need to take care of it. I tried redoing my mom's headliner in her previous car which was a 91 Buick LeSabre. It ended up sagging again, mostly I think it was that i reused the old material from the headliner.

Is there anyway to reuse my RRC's headliner material?

Can i use that adhesive spray that u get at Autozone to reapply it to the foam and headliner structure?

I really need to get this fixed as well.

Too bad you're not closer to NY, I have a liner from my 88 RR I removed because it was in such good condition. The PO had it fixed just before I purchased the Rover. I have it in my shed hoping one day I'll buy an 88 RR again.

I also have a 91 RR headliner I plan on restoring when I get a chance.

Usually no.
The foam is the part that fails on the liner. It becomes brittle and worthless. If you try to glue the fabric the glue will seap through and you'll know it.

I clipped a chunk of liner and went down and got some that matched. I challenge anyone to say it's not right on. Anyway it's reall close.

After you pull the old liner off you clean the form so the new liner with new foam will stick to the glue. It's all there on the webpage.

Seriously its really easy to do this job. Start in the morning...get it glued down. GO mow the yard or trim the hedges or watch a basketball game or play catch with the dogs or kids. Then go back and put it in.

I can't remember but it was around 50$(US) to do this job.

are the over head lights, visors, and rearview mirror mounted to the headliner or to the roof? Will they go back on if the headliner is not there?

It's gonna look like crap with no headliner. The lights will not look right if you can find a way to hold them up. there is "crossmember" like pieces going across every few feet to support the roof, and if you have a sunroof teh whole mechanism is under there. Plus there is wiring running through the ceiling to the door pillars and such..

The visors and rear view mirrors screw into the roof but you may need a spacer possibly if the headliner is not there anymore, since they usuallly go through that.

overall i wouldn't recommend it unless you don't mind the rough look.

Noise too.
When mine was out you'd be surprised how much louder it is inside.

I just did mine last weekend. I bought the headliner fabric from a fabric store. It is a bit thicker with foam backing. Cost about 35 bucks plus two cans of glue. The only problem I ran into was that the fabric could have been a bit wider and I had to strech it to get it across the backer. This caused a few little lumps in the sides but nothing major. If the fabric wouldve been wider it would have been easier. The sunroof cover was kind of a pain. I just unbolted the whole thing and let it hang. Probably not the best thing for your drain tubes though. Oh yeah and the thicker foam backing made the sunroof cover a bit harder to pull shut. Next time I would be sure to use thinner fabric and get a wider cut somehow. Looks great though overall and about 55bucks. Gordo
