Default Help - classic t case problem?!

Hey guys,
newbie here! I recently bought a 88 RRC, drove it home quite a few miles and had no problems. The other night, i came home pulled in the driveway...and then decided to pull back into the street to park it. I put it in reverse and stepped on the gas. RR didnt move just revved.
So...For whatever reason it will now only engage in 4 lo and 4 hi, i cannot get it to stay in regular drive or Hi. I took apart the whole center console area. trying to see if can get it into gear?! I cant? Anyone have any experience with this? it would be greatly appreciated. when i put it in high and then into gear (drive or reverse), i can hear it make a whining noise and can see the shafts spin...seems its just not engaging.
Thanks,
-matt

I'm not sure I understand your question. Your 1988 Range Rover has fulltime 4wd (all Range Rovers) and the LT230 transfer case has a manually locking center diff. So, when you move the shifter to the right, the center diff is open. With the shifter to the right and back you are in 4wd Hi with an open diff. Right and forward and you are in 4wd Lo and the diff is still open. Move the shifter to the left and you have now locked the center diff with forward motion engaging Lo or Hi as described above. Under no circumstances should you drive around on dry ground with the center diff in the locked position. This should only be used in situations where traction is marginal otherwise you will do damage to the drivetrain.

I don't know what you mean by regular drive. Did you get an owners manual with the truck? If so, you should take the time to familiarize yourself with the unique features of your truck. Alternatively, take the time to peruse www.rangerovers.net.

i did not recieve a owners manual, i know it is full-time 4wd drive, that is my problem! the truck will not drive in FT4WD, the only way i can get the vehicle to move forward or backwards is with the shifter moved up and to the left 4lo locked with the light on, or down to the left 4hi locked and the light comes on. when im in regular full time 4wd drive the shifter should be over to the bottom right correct? 4wd hi, open diff is the normal driving position for the shifter, so i thought. that then becomes my problem, no movement, i cant drive it.
thanks, matt

Matt,
You better take a look at your rear diff, sounds like you broke it, most likely the spider gears. When this happens, you can put it in high or low and not move, even though the rear shaft will turn, put it in high or low lock and the front drive shaft will pull you while the rear will still have no power.
Hope I am wrong but that is most likely your problem.

Mike, if he can move with the center locked, but not when it's unlocked, it could be either diff, or any axle or CV broken. whichever, all the power is going to go to the broken joint; lock the center and power is going to go to each end equally.
