Ok weird problem here. The striker pin on the hood broke a week ago on the highway, luckily, 1/2 mile from my exit and the catch saved my hood and who knows what else. So I ordered a replacement. Installed everything and, stupidly, close the hood to make sure everything works before I took the time to ensure that it lines up properly. Well, now I'm F-ed. The hood will release from the locking mechanism, but the bonnet striker is caught in the M-shaped plate on the deck. Luckily I didn't replace the grill yet so I can still see this. But the problem is I can't get to any of the bolts to remove the M plate or striker, and I can't force either part enough to get the hood open. I can't really use a lot of force as everything in that area is aluminum and soft. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance! ![]()

Dave, I can't offer any particular solution, not actually seeing the situation. Just wanted to let you know I feel your pain. A few years ago, I drove 100 miles to look over a theft recovered classic in a salvage yard. The yard owner said he was pretty sure the distributor, MAF, and a few other bits and bobs were stolen off the engine. I spent 2 hrs trying to get the hood open (the thieves had cut the hood release cable before dropping the hood) I quit and walked away from a $1200, otherwise spotless classic. This was when they were actually still worth something.
Taught me to keep the cable lubed and replace it the moment it seems iffy. I have never heard of the center bolt breaking, but I do know, when refitting those bits, start adjusting with it cranked out and keep adjusting inward till the hood is just snug on the stops. Also, let the center bolt self align the striker plate by leaving those two bolts slightly loosened and close the hood, open it and tighten. Sorry I can't be of more help with the stuck hood. Fortunately you saw fit to leave the grill off, so you have at least 'some' access. |

All I can say is welcome to my world. LOL My hood has rotter through the sheet metal supporting the stiker pin. And it is a real eye sore!! Now I have ratchet straps holding my hood down, just look!

Yeah my hood pin was starting to rust away from the hood itself. I ended up tack welding it permenantly to the hood. Just have to make sure you carefully measure before welding
