Default How to remove steering wheel pre 1995

Apologies if this is really already answered in a thread, but i couldn't find the answer after a bit of searching.

1991 classic (no airbag). removing the steering wheel. Have
1. removed the rubber cover from the wheel
2. disconnected electrical connector for the cruise control switches
3. removed the nut from the column shaft where it comes through the wheel

Cannot get wheel off.

There are two holes approx 6-7 milimeter each on opposite sides of the shaft. Shined a light in and examined these to see if there were bolts or anything to discconnect in there. Don't see anything.

Is there anything else to disconnect or loosen? Or is wheel just stuck?

Thanks

Keep pulling and hitting it from the rear but also remember to keep the nut screwed on lightly to prevent the wheel, when it does finally get freed, from hitting you in the face.

Hitting it runs the risk of destroying the steering column as they are designed to collapse in an accident. Just go and buy a steering wheel puller from your auto store. The holes you mention either side is where the puller attaches. Then there is a centre bolt on the puller that goes onto the steering shaft. You just screw in the bolt on the puller and the steering wheel will come off.

I agree with Ian on this one, a puller is easier, and less painful. I ate a steering wheel by trying to have a friend bash it, while I pulled. I believe you can rent a puller from an Autozone, or something like that.

Pat, never pull a wheel off without having the nut secured on the column to prevent it from doing what yours did to you.

thanks for the advice. will get a puller as I do not relish the thought of getting smacked in the face by the wheel. I'd probably bust more than that as i have the entire interior ripped out and nothing to land on but steel. ;-)
