Default I am now confused.

I thought the warning light with the the thermometer in the gear was the water temp but I think I am wrong. I don't have my manual for my 88 range rover classic but someone just told me that the engine fluid could be hot? Is that what the warning light means?

Thermometer with a gear is your transmission I believe.

Just fixed that problem on my '88.
Search for my post about transmission work.

Check to see if you're loosing transmission fluid out of your wadding hole in the bell housing, if yes, you're oil pump seal is shot. I had the same light on.
Look for the oil seal pic:

Found the problem, it was just a little screw that holds the fork to the sliding bar:

Here's other pics of the complete overhaul:

You need to get a manual as soon as you can, not much $$$ and available at most Rover parts dealers. Land Rover is a World car, as such it has symbols on the switches and then they print the meaning in the manual in different lanuages. ( instead of the US way of writing the function on the switch/light in English, because the whole world speaks English....don't they?) I have the Range Rover N A S cd rom and it has all the info you will ever need, provided you can read English that is, HA HA HA. (joke).
