Default Ignition Light on when Key off

Just before Christmas my daughter reported that there was a light on in the Range Rover. I went out and found the "ignition light". The one that looks like a battery glowing all red.
I took the rover down to OReilly's and they told me that the alternator was putting out 15+volts. That's not right.
Well I had bought a NAPA alternator and had a lifetime warranty and thusly asked them to get me another in. Last Friday it came in, yeah I know, sloooooooooow service.
Last night I installed the new alternator and I still have the light.
With the battery connected I can hear a very high pitched sound from the alternator. With the battery disconnected the sound is not present.

I am guessing I have a dead short. Why I'm guessing this is the battery drains to zero over night. I had a battery charger on it before I replace the alternator and could only get the charge on the battery back to 50%.

Anyone got any ideas?

defective diodes in the alternator/defective alternator will cause your problem, voltage and amperage output are not the only things to check on an alternator, quite unfurtunately most places use this method to diagnose an alternator.

It looks like it wasn't the 2nd alternator after all.
I took it out and when I looked at the back the wire that goes to the center post was shorted against the Positive post going to the battery.
Either I pinched it on there or the factory did.
Anyway it's back on the road.
