Question Middle Muffler/Silencer, '92 RRC

Does anyone know why the middle silencer has a small hole drilled in the bottom of it? I've owned 3 RRCs, and they all have it. I've noticed a faint exhaust smell while driving my '92, and I'm starting to think it may be coming from there. I climbed under it while it was running, and a little exhaust is coming from the hole. I've been unable to locate any other leaks.

Any input on the matter?

The hole is to allow any water build up to escape,so nothing to worry about.

The smell is probably just drifting back in thru the windows or tailgate seals, or (even more likely) it's oil dripping onto the manifolds then coming in thru the ventilation intake under the wipers.

Thanks for the replies.

My rear silencer doesn't have the usual down pointed exhaust tip... It's just straight. I'm starting to think maybe that could bring some exhaust fumes up through the rear corner vents. It's usually only noticeable when I downshift for a high speed pass or a big hill.
