Exclamation My hood almost killed me...Need Help!

I was on the freeway on Friday and I was going home after visiting a few relatives. Now I knew there was some rust on the front of my hood but what I didn't catch was the rust ate away at the seam where the hood skin is spot welded to the frame of the hood. At about 75 mph, my hood's skin peeled back off the frame (this was at night) and stopped just before stiking my winshield. I was in the passing lane and couldn't see out anywhere and after switching on my hazards, I was in the far right lane, I ended up pulloing over on the right. I get out and see that my hood is all mangled. I decide to remove the damn thing and shove it in the back of the RR. I was lucky to have a socket set and ratchet sitting in the wheel of the spare tire. So after taking it home and attepting to repair it, I come to think I will use Ratcheting Straps to hold the hood down. For Christ's Sake I'm already using waist belts to hold the skin to the frame of the hood. Why not use something more ghetto rigged? My main point of the whole story is where in the hell am I gonna get a replacement hood for cheap?

Yeah it was scary, considering it was the first time (hopefully the only time) that a hood came flying open like that.

About the Vermont "Grampa's Retired Rovers" Thing do they ship do you know?
Cause if they do, it'll be a hell of a charge, like for weight and, well uh...size.

Yeah. That's how I've gotten stuff from them. Their shipping prices are very reasonable. I had a whole rear differential assembly shipped for hardly anything but then again I'm not very far. You could try giving them a call maybe? Chances are it'll be fairly expensive though. I just figured I'd throw it out there.

OK thanks on the reference, as for now I was just talking to my mom, who bought my RRC for me until I pay her back, said try looking at salvage yards. I will give it shot knowing that it'll be no surprise if I don't find a hood or a RRC if any. If it turns out to be that way, I'll wait 'til the spring when things start to warm a bit, so I could possibly repair the whole damn hood. I've taken some Auto Body courses in High School, so All I'd need is some sheet metal, some Bondo, and right color paint (I'm sure to be able to find it). Until then, the ratchet straps are gonna have to hold.

I have a spare hood or two.. but shipping would probably not be worth it... check local junkyards to see if they have any RR's.

Stephen at Safari Rover has one in perfect shape. He's used to shipping large items and I'm sure would be happy to get it out of his work space. His number is: 407.782.7713

Feel free to tell him I (Lee Ann) sent ya from here.

Thanks on the references guys! I'll try my best to get in touch with them. Right now the ratcheting straps work like a dream but the only eye sore on the RRC is the rusted out holes on the hood.

There is place ( i need to look for the web link ) that makes fiberglass and carbon fiber hoods . and the carbon fiber hood is like $375 . Now If the cost of this new ( posibly little rusted ) hood is close to this . I would say go with fiberglas one . and get hood pins .

You will have a lighter front a little and rust problem would be solved .

Only thing is that I thing it would be good idea to get a group buy going . cause they most likely don't have a hood like that for sale yet .

But you need hood pins . Cause people that onw compact cars and that are dumb . get this hoods and don't use hood pins . then that hood smashes the windsheald and the sunroof ( if they have one ) cause it folds over the car like that . And that's from the latch coming off the hood ( basicly vibration will crack that thin fiberglass that glued to the steel ) .

http://www.frankscustomfiberglass.com/
Ok I found it , and the cheapest fiberglass hood is $215 or so . and that's the one that you need hood pins .

Ok thanks! This might be an alternative if I decide not to get the hood offered to me.

I thought the hood pins would give it that "Off roading" type of look. Plus I go four wheeling usually during the night, hence why I put four off road lights on the Roof Rack on my RRC.
