Default Mystery Driveline Drag...

I am experiencing a drag on my drive line that I can't locate. I have checked diffs and changed fluids, tranny is topped up and working good (fingers crossed after my rebuild), CV joints seem good (topped up fluid). It is almost like a brake dragging...and yet all four corners check out ok. E-brake seems to be free...I don't think it's creeping on.

My only guess is that mabey my T-case viscious coupling is starting to fail...however I do not notice any excessive steering pressure on pavement. What's the best way to check to see if the viscious coupling is locked up?

Well, after driving some more today I have noticed that I am getting more steering resistance...which leads me to believe that my T-case VC is locking up.
So, no more driving and I will drain the fluid and take a look...will it smell burnt like a tranny does? Debris? Can I drop out the front propshaft to check function of the VC? Can you drive with a locked up VC and NO front propshaft? (I suspect not).

If it is bad, I think I will go with a D1 LT230T...Mostly because the local boneyard has 2 that they will deal on. As I understand it, I will need X-case, Front propshaft, X-case mounts, Shifter...anything else? Rear propshaft?

I'm having similar issues w/ my '93 RRC. I too have narrowed it down to the VC. Weird thing is that I have no problems driving in the rain. I tried driving in a circle to see if any wheel lock up but I get nothing. I do feel a drag from the VC. It's just as noticeable going in a straight line.

As far as the LT230 conversion goes, I don't think you need to replace either prop shafts. I could be wrong on that. Don't forget that you have to butcher the center console a bit to accommodate the new lever movement.

Yes...straight line symptoms are like its in...well...4 wheel drive. Steering was lets say...more resistant...required more pressure to move steering wheel. I was starting to get a little wheel hop/steering jerkyness on paved turns too. Didn't notice it so much on dirt though...for obvious reasons. Oh...much more noisy too.

BTW, you will need: the front drive shaft, frame mounts, shifter linkage, and a pre 96 output shaft if the LT230 is from a post 96 D1

I'll take a closer look at the steering stabilizer...but I think it's ok.

I'm going to pull the front propshaft this weekend and see if that makes a difference.
