Default Mystery Noise

I've developed a noise from somewhere around the transfer case/emergency brake area (as best i can tell). It only happens when moving, and it starts around 15 mph on the speedo. I've pulled both CV joints and they are fine, and besides it not that clicking sound a CV makes.

It's a tink, tink, tink sort of sound like if something metal was hitting something spinning.

Again, as best i can tell its coming from the area around the TC/e-brake drum.

Any ideas?

Oooooooooh! I love this game.
j/k
You sure it's not one of the brake splash guards?
When we had one bent wrong it rubbed on the wheel and made a nice tink sound, especially when turning.

Yeah, its always fun to try and describe a noise on the internet, and especially fun to diagnose. Trust me, I wanted to avoid coming here with a noise question.

Anyway, no, its not coming from the front axle, but the sound is very similiar to a mud guard vibrating against something - kind of that thin metal sound. Also, it doesn't matter if its straight or turning, and its fairly rythmic in nature.

If it does it at "rolling speeds" have some one drive while you walk beside it.
It will help in pin pointing the location. That's how I found the brake disc shield sound.
If it's making the ting sound that is similar. You could eliminate a lot of stuff, knowing if it's making that sound it's got to be similarly designed. Meaning an object that is bolted on four corners is not going to make a ringing sound.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Very funny. It's been so damn hot here lately i could use some colder weather. We broke a record in July for days over 100.

Well, I decided to check the mechaics diagnosis for myself by jacking the front and rear. Turns out, the noise is coming from the front diff and not the rear. Idiot. Maybe he didnt realize its full time four wheel drive and he forgot which end he was looking at.
