Default Need a fuel pump in a hurry, what works?

I am in the process of buying a 92 RRC and am picking it up Saturday morning. It is sitting in the mechanics shop, not running. He says its a fuel pump. Im going to have the vehicle towed to my friends house (its in a different city) and try to replace the pump. Since I cannot order the correct pump and get it here in time, I was wondering what else works? Autozone and Napa do not have any in stock. I read somewhere that a different pump will work if the wires are cut and switched? At NAPA they have a Carter unit (P74006) that is supposed to work. Anyone know?

thats actually where I found the info, but it said the information was not confirmed. I found a chart with similar info on discoweb.org and it also said it was not confirmed. I was just trying to see if anyone had successfuly used a different pump. I guess I will just try it out and see. Thanks

Did some more researching. I have heard to use chevy cavalier pumps, cadillac seville pumps, and an airtrex 3240 pump with similar units having the same part number. After researching, I have found that the 1989 Caddilac Seville pump and the 1989 Cavalier 4cyl pump are the same (part #E3212 from Autozone). However, the 1989 6cyl Cavalier pump has the same part number as the Airtrex 3240 pump. I originally figured I would go with the 6cyl cavalier since it has a larger engine, but the 4cyl cavalier has the same pump as a V8 Caddilac. Im not sure which to get, Any suggestions?

Sorry I keep adding to this thread, but it may help others in the future.

Just a quick word of advice: First, make sure it isn't just the damn fuse. Before you unbolt or replace anything you need to always, always check the associated fuse. If you are used to new cars that almost never blow a fuse, or even reliable old cars, you need to change your mindset.

I planned on checking the fuse, the inertia switch, and taking out the relay and putting the power seat relay in to check it all before I try the pump. I have not gotten a manual yet, so I suppose I will just check and replace any fuse that needs it.
Thanks for the welcome and the link.

On the 92 there are two relays under the back side of the passenger seat that are next to each other. One is blue and one is black. The blue one is the fuel pump. There are also two fuses (typical spade type) that are inline back there. I believe one is to the fuel pump and one to the ecu. I'd also check the fuse box of course for any bad fuses. You should feel the blue relay click when you try to start it. The fuel pump should then run for about 5 seconds. The 92 has the plastic style pumps, the early models are different, but I had a Cavalier pump in my 89 for 5 yrs or so and it worked until I retired it. Paul Grant can sell you a good used one if you need one. Post up on the wanted boards. Gordo.

Thanks that is great info. These relays, are they just under the seat, or do I have to pull the carpet up? Also, the cavalier pump you used, was it for a 4cyl or a 6cyl?

I got the car fixed and running. Thanks for all the help and links everyone

For any one else searching in the future, I used a fuel pump for a 1989 Caddillac Seville. This pump is also used in 1989 4cyl Chevy Cavaliers and Berettas. The part number from Autozone is E3212. Price is $69.99
