Default New...With bad luck

First off, I am stoked to be apart of this community, and greetings to all

I just bought (deal of the century) an almost perfect SWB Range Rover Classic, black on tan, and shortly after I bought it, I got in an accident...ugh!

So, the Range was drivable and there was only a small dent in the front bumper (although there was substantial damage to the Ford Ranger involved). As I was getting ready to leave the scene of the accident, Moose (the RRC) checked out just fine, but as I got down the road, I began to hear a pulsating sound (almost like a siren) from right in front of the steering wheel. Naturally, I wanted to slow the Range down, but I couldnt, I had almost no stopping power. I limped it to a safe location and realized that I had brake fluid leaking all over the front driver side wheel due to a broken brake line, and the pulsating sound was coming from what I identified as the ABS pump...

I ordered new lines for the front (all four, because I dont want to chance any of the other ones going out on me) and I am going to do the change myself, but my question is with the ABS pump, did that pulsating/siren-like sound mean the pump was moving on to the spirit in the sky???? Or will it go back to normal once it is able to accumulate and maintain pressure? Any tips, links, and help will be much appreciated.

Please help guys, this is my first Range, and I'm pretty sure I can trust you all...Thanks

the big vacum pump on the left fender makes alot of noise, it actually provides vacumm for power steering, cruise control, and brakes, when the engine isn't running for instance if you stalled your engine going up a hill you still have power brakes, thats why i laugh at all those videos of jeeps stalling on steep hills then tumbling down them! mine is noisy as heck but i'm sure they start out quiet, just turn up the radio...?

I'd do some searching on this site. I haven't done it myself, but I understand that bleeding the brakes on here is a PITA and the procedure is specific to these vehicles. Keep us posted on your progress.

What vacuum pump???

Bowen, The ABS pump will make some noise if it goes dry like that. Like OldnDirty said. Find the right brake bleeding proceedure and then when you have bled the brake 4 or 5 times trying to firgure it out, do it once more for good measure. The pump should return to normal and quite down.

Alrighty guys,

I changed the lines (that I got for $15 a piece, free shipping!) this evening and bled the brakes (not according to the guide, because that was not working, and I could not build up any pressure) and the sound died down a bit, but it still is not gone, so I am convinced that the ABS pump is filing for divorce and leaving me soon. It drives fine now, but the way the pump is still struggling to accumulate pressure, its bout' to go. Any tips on a good priced used ABS pump, 'cause I don't think my pocket can handle a new one just yet...

News,

The siren sound is completely gone, the abs pump self healed its self. I am not complaining.
