Thumbs up Newbie and a 94

Hi all.

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm new to the Range Rover world and this is my first. I've always liked the classics but never had much time to enjoy something like a Rover. I've finally decided to do some "fun" stuff with my spare time and the wife has agreed (so far).

So, I picked up this 94 in Michigan late last year and I've driven it all winter. It's in nice shape and previous owner did a ton of work to it. Just a few minor nits to fix (cruise control, rear defroster, PS leak, rear defroster, tailgate actuator) and it should be good to go. Oh, I just had a code 17 pop up and my first 'check engine' light. Whee! The fun begins. At any rate, its good to pour over all the archives here.

Just one question... I've found a few different rangie boards (this one, rangerovers.net, discoweb.org). Different crowds at each one? Some people follow more than one?

Here's a pic (at a car show by the previous owner):

That's a good looking truck. Wow so pretty!
Okay I post up stuff on my site. And you've listed the other ones I read besides asking questions here.

17 is the Throttle Position Sensor.
That a good one to start with. Replace it. It's on top the engine and easy to get to. It's a normal wear part. You might never replace another one.

Click the pic in my sig for my site.
And welcome to the board.

Nice looking truck! I have been to other forums...some have more history and you can find some data better, but the people here totally rock. Every time I've had problems, people have been right there to help out.

Welcome to the club...GO CLASSICS!!!

Thanks for the replies. I think that was right after the PO had it repainted so its all purdy there. It's been offroaded a few times and has added a few "character" dings but its still a nice truck from 20 feet away.

I pulled the potentiometer last night and cleaned it up. It didn't look bad and it still had some "spring" to it. I unhooked my battery and it cleared the code and it hasn't come back yet so I'll give it some time to see if it comes back.

Another on the to-do list: figure out why there's a puddle in my front passenger floorboard. I had to cut the insulation out because it was so sopped with water I don't think it would ever dry in the truck.

That's an easy one.
Make sure the air conditioning drain hoses exit the vehicle. They are right there in direct view looking under the dash.
Secondly it is common that the windshield is not sealed and water gets in.
The windshield allows for a little twist in the frame. Over the years your rubber bits don't flex like they did new.
Also check under the carpet and pad to make sure you don't have any holes or rust. These to are all toocommon.

You really didn't do much.

They fail from interal failure. It works the same way as a volume knob. And, I'm sure you have heard a volume knob get scratchy as it gets older.

Your TPS is similar....

So, plan on buying 2 things... A TPS for when the light comes back on.

Second...

The test procedure for this part, and many others are found here.

It WILL save you time, money and heartache. Best $100 you will spend on your car.

Great looking Classic you got there!

I didn't think I accomplished much but popping the sensor off and taking a look. Just another kernel of knowledge. I had installed a coil over the weekend and that's when the code 17 popped up. Since it's my first code (no longer a code virgin), I decided to clear it just to see if it comes back. The rover has been running great so I thought it may have been a false code or somehow caused by my mucking around over last weekend. Just wanted to be sure.

I do have the repair manual on cd-rom...

Thanks!
