Changing oil on my 1991 classic. Oil drain plug is stuck, will not budge. Anyone run across this and if so whats the solution?
On a postive note I started her up to warm up the oil to ease the oil change. She has been sitting dormant in my garage while I've been doing restoration and I havent turned over the engine since June. Started right up without any hesitation (yes I keep the battery on a charger) - but i was just amazed that there wasn't a hard start, sputtering, or anything. Ran fine for 10 minutes before I shut her off. Now if someone could just help me get that drain plug unstuck... Thanks.

pb blaster is good stuff, but if you want a funky smell to go with it use some aero-kroil, and if it still seems stuck with the breaker bar, try holding pressure on the bar while tapping the handle with a hammer... use a normal hammer, not a 18lb sledge...oh and be sure you are turning the right way, it can be easy to get turned around when laying upside down

I gatherr you've owned this truck for a while. Were you the last person to do an oil change, or are you one of the few Classic owners who actually pays one of those quickie sites to change it for you? Only time I have ever come accross a drain plug that abolutely wouldn't budge was because the owner went to a Jiffy lube and they cross threaded the plug. Says alot for the brain power of those who work there.
Put a box wrench on it and thump it with a rubber mallet. As long as you are going in the right direction, it's going to unscrew. The crush washer is probably way crushed and though they say never reuse them, I use them 2-3 changes. But then, I don't use an 8' pipe on them when I put it back on either. |

damn funny stuff :-)
-righty tighty lefty loosey: check -use strength: affirmative on that one too -unable to get enough leverage on it with adjustable wrench but i dont have a socket large enough. does anyone know what size socket it is? looks larger than 1 & 1/16 inch in answer to Terry, I have not changed the oil on this truck myself. she has been largely dormant for quite some time, and i had someone else do the oil changes for me before

bought a 1 1/8 socket... cannot get it onto the plug due to interference from the catalytic converter. have ordered a new drain plug as they are cheap and this one is getting a bit chewed up. tried using a propane torch to heat the plug up hoping to free it. Did not work. Going to try pipe wrench now that I dont care about distroying the plug.

I actually have run into this once with my 92 rrc and being a former Marine at 6'0 220 pounds, lack of strength was not the issue. I actually put enough torque on the bolt trying to loosen it that the entire truck started moving upwards as I pressed the wrench! In the end the cure came by way of wrapping an oil rag around a 28mm wrench and pulling on it while using my other fist as a hammer on my knuckles. My understanding is that if you use an improper gasket, or wait a long time between changes the gasket can sort of melt itself to the pan over time.
