Default oil light blinks for a few seconds...

MY oil light blinks for about 10 seconds when starting in the morning, mornings are cold about 10 degrees F . i drained the 10 w40 out and replenished it with some mobil 1 of a lesser viscosity, which seemed to help the problem but it still blinks on the first cold start of the day after that it doesn't do it. till tommorrow. i put a bosch filter on and before that i had a napa gold before that a cooper. i wonder if getting a filter with a check valve will do it. with the cooper filter i never had this...of course it was summer too.Anything to worry about?

The oil light flashes to indicate that the oil level is low and should be checked. Do check it, but if it isn't low then welcome to the club of Range Rover Classic owners with bad oil level sensors. Mine is bad, so I check the oil level every Saturday.

Oh, if you ever see that oil light come on solid while you're driving then stop the engine ASAP. The oil light also warns for low oil pressure. Just because you ignore its flashing after startup doesn't mean you should ignore it otherwise.

A flashing oil light on start up is nothing to worry about. Mine's been doing that for 3 years. It's pretty common. Skucera is right though...Just make sure you have enough oil in there. If you change every 3000 and your engine isn't burning oil, you should be okay. But it's a good idea to check it regularly.

Rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1,000 RPM.

Alright. thanks for the consensus. the oil level is good , this motor doesn't consume much... surprisingly. I also noticed the light blinking more with the long filter , the napa gold(wix) i ran last time , seemed to make the light blink a little longer than this shorter bosch filter. i had no blinking when i ran the cooper filter, so maybe i'll try one again. thanks again for the input.

I think I read that the idiot light for oil pressure is set to 14 psi on the Range Rover, but don't quote me on that. I might be remembering some other car's idiot light instead.

I think you're right, or closer to the truth than I was. I couldn't find any info on the Rover or Buick V-8's oil sender threshold, but I did find the value printed in my Olds Custom Cruiser's repair manual. The Olds Rocket V-8's oil pressure warning light comes on at 5 psi. Yeah, different engines, but they were both developed by GM by the same generation of engineers. My Olds also has the optional oil pressure gauge and its red line is at 5 psi too. That makes a 2 psi or 5 psi minimum threshold extremely likely for the Rover V-8, despite the changes by the Leyland engineers over the years.

Thank you for correcting me. It's been enlightening.
