Default A Real Temp Guage Updated!

Has anyone come up with how/where to mount an aftermarket temp guage? You know, one with numbers and that's not made by Lucas? Any ideas on where to mount the sending unit?

There is a flat boss above where the electrical temp sender mounts. That is where I drilled and tapped a 3/8" Pipe thread for mine.

Thanks Terry. I'm also thinking I could take the existing electrical sending unit out and put a mechanical one in its place. Looks to be very similiar in size and thread. I'll let everyone know.

Also for anyone interested, I pulled the electrical sending unit for the oil pump and replaced it with a mechanical unit. I then installed the gauge where the cig lighter was to the left of the radio. It fits perfectly. I moved the lighter to one of the blank spaces where the cruise control on/off button is located. I will try to post pics later.

Okay, so here's what i ended up doing. I bought a Sunpro temp guage at Autozone for $16 and plumbed it into the hole where the electric temp sending unit was. It fit perfectly using one of the adapters that came with the kit as you can see in pic #1.

i mounted it next to the oil pressure gauge I installed in #2. I moved the cig lighter up to the switch panel. BTW if you notice to the left of the switch panel there is rather a poor job of a toggle switch (previous owner) that turns on the electric fans. I can explain the wiring if anyone is interested.

#3 has nothing to do with the thread, i just like it.

And now, no more lucas gauges and idiot lights!

Got an idea from another forum. Could you get a Tee fitting so you could have both a real pressure gauge and the idiot light??? If so what would the sizes be?

On RRC, pre-serpentine belt Discos, and 93,94 & 95 Defenders (in other words, all trucks with distributors, and earlier style oil pumps) There is a seconf tapping on the oil pump. so you don't need a Tee. The thread is 1/4" British pipe (which is not tapered) and is identical to a US 1/2" UNF bolt thread. I have made adapters using this bolt, 1/2" long, drilled and tapped for 1/8" NPT. You also need to use a copper crush washer.
