Default Rebuilt Alternator?

Anyone out there had any experince with rebuilt alternators on a 4.2? Severl mechanics are saying they usually are not right for these vehicles. I found a new Merelli for $290 - not too bad I guess.

I found a rebuilt alt from Autozone for a 92 RRC, $89.99. Surprised they had one. It was a direct fit, I installed it in the parking lot under a street light (might be a redneck) , it has worked for over two years no problem. However when I accel the headlights get brighter and the a/c fan goes into superhigh. I would assume the voltage regulator is within the alternator, but who knows with rover could be under my seat.

My alternator is/has started losing its charging ability. I through it on this Ocilloscope to measure my spark plug KV, or to see which cylinder has a lack of ignition power.

The machine requires a twelve volt hook up, so I just hook it to the battery. While I do this test, it looks at alternator wave patterns, and charging voltage. It is at about 13.8 volts, and the wave pattern is it little bumpy, so my alternator is gettin' worn, and from all the wheelin' I do, it does it no justice.

Might consider that Mean Green Alternator.

after my third rebuilt alt for my wifes D1 94, I bought a used one and tossed it in. No further probs. BTW it was from autozone and they lasted about a month each. Lifetime warranty but junk. Gordo
PS: Rover connection has some decent deals on new ones.

You can rebuild them yourself. Usually they only need bearings and brushes. A lot cheaper and you can make sure you use quality parts.

Or find your self a auto electric shop that rebuilds starters and alternators, have them build yours and then you'll know it has been done right and should only cost $150 or so.

You'll never believe me...but my dealer did a great job rebuilding my altenator about eight months ago. The RR went in for other issues, and on the way, I knew something was going wrong (dealer is about 45 minutes away.) During the drive, started to hear alternator whine in the stereo (first time ever) and noticed windows and sunroof were WAY slow. Anyways, got to the dealer and the next day or two, dealer called and said the alternator had gone bad. He priced me a new one, you know how that went ($450 new, three weeks from England and all that...) and then he suggested that his guys rebuild it. I said sure, and actually stopped by to see how close it was to rebuilding the old alternator I had in my Chevy. Sure as shit, just replace the bearings, brushes and true the commutator and it was good as new. I think they also replaced some voltage regulator that was internal also.

It has worked great, and they charged me less that $100 to do it. Perhaps it was also because I think I made the dealer rent payment the month prior! LOL!
