Removed (swapped) radio in '95 Classic - no special tools

Last night I swapped the radio in my '95 classic for one I got through ebay (Paul Grant) recently. It was a breeze. I believe the appropriate radio removal tool is a 5-sided key (similar to an allen-key). However one of the small flathead screwdrivers from my small driver kit (probably considered an eyeglass repair kit) fit well into the screw head. No slop and it worked like a champ.
Swapped the radios, entered the supplied code and all is well.

Is your '95 radio the same as the radio in a '92? I take it you swapped with another RR OEM radio, correct?

Mine generates a nice crackling sound associated with the volume adjustment (a short somewhere no doubt) and I'd like to replace...maybe with a non-oem unit...though I worry about creating follow-on issues.

I indeed replaced with an OEM radio. I'm not sure if it's the same as the '92. I believe the '95 mounts in the dash (around the vents) as opposed to near the console as the '92. Here's a photo of the one I installed.
I also thought about a non-OEM radio. Following are the reasons I went OEM:
1. I like the look of the OEM radio. I didn't look around too much but most I saw were very neon-ish radios
2. I got the used radio for not much money (it was from a '96 Disco)
3. The wiring was 100% plug and play. I've ready some posts on going non-oem and it seems to be less than straightfoward hooking into the speaker system the '95 has (subwoofer, etc.). Not sure if this is an issue for a '92.
4. I wanted to use the existing/functioning CD changer and the OEM worked for that.

I'll prob. end up selling my original radio if this one pans out for a few weeks. All worked on the existing except the LCD backlight (can't see it at night w/out a light on). Let me know if you're interested (and you think it will work for you). I can send a photo of the rear panel for comparison).

Also - here's a link to a company that refurbs rover radios. You can either send yours for repair or buy a replacement that's been refurbed.
