removing the coating from taillight guards - Land Rovers Only

the coating on the tai light guards is peeling in a couple of areas, and i would like to remove it and recoat or repait them.

they sem to be coated with some type of epoxy coating. other than sandblasting, any ideas on what might remove the coating? i have tried a strong paint stripper, it would'nt even soften the stuff

my dad cleaned the paint off of mine he is going to check the type of acid he used a friend picked it up for him from his work and he's not sure if it was hydrocholric acid or sulfiric.

Ha ha ha, just bolt them to the back of my Rover. Whatever it is on there it will not stand a chance. Mine are allmost all bare rusty metal.
If I was you I would just get them sand blasted (if not too rusty) or buy new ones. I hate using chemical strippers.....nasty stuff and you should use all the safety equipment invented by man, then you have to dispose of it correctly. A big PIA.

Naval Jelly and a razor blade. Cut the coating in as many places as you can and hit it with the naval jelly. The nylon or whatever the coating is made of will loosen and you should be able to pull off substantial amounts of the coating. Repeat until all is is removed. Hopefully you will still have some metal left to bolt back on the truck.

Mine only took two rounds but then I figured out that they didn't seem to really work with the truck.

Learned my lesson on zero feedback ebayers.

I have always used a small propane torch and a putty knife. Iv'e been told that most powder coating shops burn it off

I just did mine a few months ago, I took a torch and burned off 90% of it the i took a wire brush and took all the loose stuff off. then I sandblasted them and had the local powder coater spray them with textured black powder coat. They now look awsome and the textured black realy hides the imperfections.
