Default Removing the fan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am trying to replace the water pump on my early production 92 RR and I can't seem to remove the fan. There is a large nut behind the fan towards the engine block and I assume that's what I need to remove, however, when I put a wrench to it, it just turns freely with the water pump. What am I missing here? Is there some way to lock it down? I will post a few pictures.

Thanks

It is reversed threaded... righty loosey lefty tighty.
I just put a big C wrench on it & whack it with a hammer.

Land Rover has a tool to hold the pump pulley while you turn the nut.Try to wedge a long screw driver between one of the bolt heads and the fan boss. I that doesn't work you can put a wrench on the nut and postion it to where you can get a good clean shot at the end of the wrench and smack it with a quick sharp blow in the proper direction to break free the nut. Because you are replacing the pump you can take a hammer and give the wrench a good rap downward and slightly in direction of removal this usually works but there are some that are a real pain. good luck

It spins freely in both directions. There has to be a way to stop the pump from turning.

Edit* A tool to hold the pulley would help. I will try the other suggestions. Are you certain it is reverse threaded?

While we are looking under my hood, I was wondering if it would be okay to leave the AC belt off? The AC isn't working and the tensioner tends to squeek from time to time.

I take a vise grip and clamp it onto one of the pulleys preventing any movement in the direction I have to hit the wrench to loosen the nut. Works every time and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a special tool.

And Kevin is correct about the direction. From serpentine configurations onward they went the other way.

You have to use some care but I haven't had a problem with the hundreds of fans I removed.

Thanks for all the input. I managed to remove it using vice grips.
