Default Reversing Steel Wheels

Hey all,
New to the Range Rover community with a '91 Classic and have seen a few pics of Classics with "reversed" Disco steel wheels. Does anyone know if "reversed" means that the wheels are just turned around and mounted backwards to get the offset or do you actually have to cut the centers out and weld them back in reverse?

I had "Reversed" disco rims on my Rangie. They actually cut the centres out, reverse them and then weld them back in. So the centre faces the correct direction, but the actual rim is back to front.

I have a set of 4 reversed Disco steelies with 265/75 mud terrains on my Series III. Its the ghetto version, so the rims were just flipped around backwards. The valve stems were moved though, so they now correctly face out. I've used the wheels both reveresed and regular on the Series. The problem with the ghetto method I used is that the wheel lugs don't seat properly when they're reversed. They've been tightened down many times over the years and have created their own grooves in the wheels so they seat better now than the first fitting. A tire shop will probably refuse to put them on that way for you. Anyway, they work just fine although my Series tops out at 50mph and I don't think I'd mount them reversed on my RRC. Failure would be scary at higher speeds... =)

(I know, someone's going to chime in to say its not safe)

I'm less worried about safe and more worried about it being ugly!

put some pictures up- I am curious about how this would look, and why it would be done

They loook fine. The wheel nuts sit on top instead of "in" the grooves.
Reversed Disco steelies look really good on the Series trucks. They'd probably stick out pretty far on a RRC so you'd want to trim your fenders. I believe this is Ian's Rangie with reversed Disco steels in the top right: Range Rover Classic Tire Choices

Is that ugly? I don't think so.

I'll take some pictures of the grooves + the flipped valve stems on my wheels tonight. They are currently "regular" on my Series, not reversed, because I'm trying to sell it. They look badass reversed on the old Rover, but it doesn't look very original.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if carefully using a grinder to make a groove for the lug nuts to sit in would work? Considerably cheaper than having the centers cut out and welded back.
