Default $$$Roof rack$$$

Ok lads, whats the deal with the cost of roof racks for Rover's? I mean WOW, are they made of gold or platinum? Why can I pay less for a lift kit than a Brownchurch roof rack? Has old Bin Ladin taken over the production of roof racks in a attempt to bankrupt the free world? Here we go again, Im looking at building my own. I would like to get some feedback on what's hot and what's not, how, why, what you use yours for. If you have made your own or realy like a certain make/model post some pic's if you can Cheers.

You can make your own, but it isnt as easy as you think. I will say the brownchurch is a nice rack, but as with any powdercoated item, they rust out. ive got one in my garage that I sold for 200 bucks to a buddy, however, it needs some minor welding work done to it and has the coating peeling off in some places. Its probably around 8-10 yrs old. Personally if I had to do it over again, I would look into making an aluminum rack.

Aluminum eh, I like the sound of that. I assume the Brownchurch unit is mounted on the rain gutters. Anyone know how much weight the gutters can support? Don't want to get carried away on trail with too much weight up on a roof rack but I will need it to occasionaly carry a small boat to satisfy my other vice, Fishing!

My well used Bronwchurch (and I think I am the 4th owner) has rust spots, but I will tell you that I weigh 280 and I was ON the rack, with a full size spare tire, standing up there and wrestling with getting the tire in place, and saw NO issues with the raingutters or anything.

I am going to pick up 4 more legs hopefully and then I'll fab some extra mounts so I can go 5 feet on either side...then I should be able to really ease up the per leg weight.....

astateofmike, the Brownchurch unit, you are the 4th owner! do these things change hands often, why? Thanks daway for the heads up on the AB aluminum unit, I missed that one. At $420.00 USD inc mounting hardwear + any tax's and shipping to me in Canada, it is getting better $$$ wise. I wonder how tough they are? Anyone have first hand knowledge of this rack from AB?

there r some members here that have them, cant remember who? there was a thread awhile, while back but they said they liked them and light weight to take off if not needed. here is the 50x50, $199. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/9231.cfm here is the wilderness rack that is nice put $$$, might google the names and see if they are cheaper at online wholesale shops. it does put the price up when buying from the States from Canada plus shipping is sometimes crazy!

I am extremely happy with the Surco rack I put on my RRC. I am excited to find the hi lift mount on this website.

I have an extra Surco 48" rack, that just needs new screws. I will sell for a hundred plus shipping if interested.

You should be fine then. It was not the basket that was the issue, more the crossbars.

I do like the availability of mounts for the rack, and it looked good and didn't ever look damaged from tree branches and stuff. If I was doing it again, I would watch CL for a spare crossbar set up, and run it inthe middle of the rack, not even attached, but under the center so that there was load dispersment. I think it would have held more weight that way.

I went to Lowes and got 48" vinly coated closet shelves and made a floor...20 bucks and some zip ties, and that worked fine. Just make sure to tie down the tire real well and put a cover on it if it will be sitting in the sun.

And of course, post pictures
