Default RRC - Camel trophy Replica

Well, the reason I bought a Range Rover in the first place, other than its amazing offroad capabilities, etc, was because of how I LOVE the look of them in the Camel Trophy. The colour, the stickers, everything. SO, I knew I wanted to have one looking like that, somewhat a 'replica' if you will.

Anyway, I have been gathering the supplies, and the information necessary for this. The colour is "SandGlow", a sort of a matte yellow. So with all this info in hand, and on a tight budget to complete the project, I contacted my long time good friend at Eurostyle Design, Filip(whom I owe great many thanks to). Knowing Filip, he could not turn down partaking in such a great project, and several weeks later, we are in the shop beginning the work. We are estimating about a week's worth of work(on and off ofcourse).
All of the prep will be done by us.

Now a little background, the Rover is a Florida Vehicle, so the red (original, and resprayed) paint was dull, and peeling. The crappy respray it had seen was definitely a culprit in it all. It was a perfect candidate for my project.
Now on to the pictures... Enjoy

The way the truck entered the shop.

Some fun with the letters we were taking off. "Range over"

"Ran over"

"Danger Rover"

"Anger"

Then removing the grills, trim, lights, rear light, washer nozzles, etc etc...

Then onto the taping of the edges...

Then we looked over the truck and noted all of the areas some body work will be required.
A nice sized dent int he rear left quarter.

So after removing it and banging the dent out, it is ready for the final touches.

Then Fil climbed up on the ARB bumper(look it can be used as a step), and began working on the hood. THere was a nise sized spot where the paint had cracked sagnificantly, sorry I forgot to take a picture of the damage.

Then some finishing putty to smooth out what is left behind...

And then towards the end of the night, 5 or so hours into the project...

Tonight I will be going back for several more hours to begin the main sanding.
The vehicle will be sanded once, with 100 grit, followed by a sanding of 320 grit.
Stay tuned..

Ok, not to be a critic or anything, I love your idea, but didn't you say in another post that you were going to put on a lift. If so, wouldn't that be more prudent, then painting. Wouldn't the cost be the same??? Again not being a critic, I am just observing some strange priorities......

CT trucks had skinny tires. White letters not even an option on Michelin XZL.

Just having fun with you!

My note. Do the wheels at the same time!

why even bother with 100 grit?...just go straight to it with 320. what type of paint did you plan on spraying..??

base coat/clear coat

or just an enamel..or acrylic..or urethane single stage?

i actually paint cars at a body shop, so if you need any help at all...let me know.

feel free to send me a private message!

i doubt it will be base clear with 320 grit, unless you like to get the scratchy look before you actually scratch it up in the bush

I said I was going to do the lift in the spring. The paint could not withstand the winters we have here, without allowing rust to form on the hood and other areas. The red paint was cracked, faded, peeling, and needed to be done. As soon as the paint is finished, it will be oil sprayed to prevent rust(as it has minimal amounts). The paint will cost nowhere NEAR the ~2000 that my lift will cost me.

Hehehe, you are right, they do have skinny tires. I hate skinny tires for the most part. This will be a replica with a personal touch.. LOL Anyway, the letters will 98.9% be painted black(on the tires).
What do you mean to the wheels?Yello? God no. lol

Thanks a lot for the offer of help! I might just need to ask ya few Q's as they arise.
THe paint on the truck was disgusting, several layers that were cracked and peeling, and many areas which had dents or imperfections. So we decided(with the advice of a local body shop friend) to go pretty much to the first layer of paint. Then kit all the imperfections(as you will see in the pics I will post shortly), and the do 320 over that.
We were going to be priming, but due to several reasons decided not to. There will be primer applied to all the areas which were kitted though. We were adviced to do Urethane( I bought the expensive paint), 3-4 coats, which should withstand the harsh environments this truck will be subjected to. hehehe We are just putting a lot of work into the prep. I am sure it will not be 100%, but it will defnitely look nice.

So last night after work I went there for several more hours to do finish the sanding with 100grit.
(Had to use a damn ladder to do the roof LOL)

Roof done(THe paint on the roof was soo dull and rough, it felt like it was already sanded).

The imperfection on the hood ready to be primed..

My friend is aparently a perfectionist, so he started going through thte truck with comb in hand looking for ANY, however slight, imperfections in the body and kitting them.

Soon the truck looked like a dalmation.. LOL

The back

A NASTY little surprise on the trunk.. We will have to grind a tad and kit.

Left side fully sanded and awaiting a look over...

ANd me after, I Look like I have red hair... Aghh I took a shower after that and the water was coming off red. I thought I might be bleeding or something...

Anyway, that's it for now... I shall be back on tuesday...(monday I have damn school)....

PS. Yes, that is power steering fluid leaking. PO put PS fluid, not AT fluid. Needs to be changed.

Toyata Jon, thanks for the positive and supportive comments. I am not set out to "wow" the world, I just get pleasure out of working on my project, and like to share it. I don't expect everyone to like it, and there may be some criticism, but Hank is just one of those people you have to ignore, because they arent even worth your time.

I know what you mean about the sanding, I will have to re-sand it now with a different grid.

This is something I have thought about myself. My 88 is blue with peeling paint and one white door, so.... Just hadn't had time to give any serious thought so far. I look forward to seeing your results.

As for Hank, well we have WWJD, WTH, WTF, and now I am going to add a new one. Just a plain ole FKH. I am sure the msg is clear enough.

$2000 for a lift? Are you doing a 5" lift? You can do OME or Big Blues for a few hundred bucks..

Good luck with the paint job, i'll be interested to see how it comes out.. There will always be critics, my suggestion, instead of going with the 'camel trophy replica' idea, which is very hard since a lot of the parts are no longer available.. just go 'camel trophy color & style'.

I am doing the Full 3"RTM with the arms and everything. It is about 1400 or so with all the brake lines, etc, which converts to 1700 Canadian. Plus 1" spacer which is about 100$, I am looking at 1800canadian.

You are right, it is the camel trophy type, not exactly a replica to its full extent.
