Default RRC year changes?

All right gang. I don't have the time to do the research with my work schedule, so I'm being lazy and just asking you. Hopefully somebody will be nice and just answer these without too much flaming.

Some quick questions, all about which years were the relevant changes;

Which years were the change points for t-cases, engines, brake upgrades, and the all important 24 spline axles.

???

I know the 95 classic has the 24 spline, and the Disco style dash, but is it worth trying to hunt down one? If I can find a different year, can I get the best of everything mentioned above, without having to look for a 95?

Not going to offroad it (yet), but want the best and biggest available for hurricane season, and the ever present offroad mod genetics I seem to have.

Reason for asking is I've looked over my finances, and I can't afford a 02' P38a, and the new Ducati I'm looking at. So I need to back down my RR search to a Classic, for now.

Thanks.

XM, the other night when I was looking at Range Rovers there was a really clean/one owner in Texas. It was a 95, white LWB, it looked fantastic, had me thinking for a minute, it had I believe 116,000 on it for just over $5000.00. It was in autotrader. Private seller, claimed they had service records.

I might be wrong but I believe

93 - went to 24 spline
90 - went to the BW case

LWB's have the 4.2

80's rovers have 3.5

88 was the last year of the locking t/c (lt-230) 89 switched to the borg.89 first year of the 3.9
I have read that 93 was the switch to 24 spines BUT when my brothers 94 LWB rear diff went out I gave him the one out of my 93 LWB, guess what, they were BOTH 10 SPLINE! Also my daily driver 93 LWB has the 10 spline.???? 90 was the first year of abs option, and the only year with abs and without sway bars. any other year classic with abs came with sway bars.

My favourite story is a Discovery that came from the factory with 10 spline in the front and 24 spline in the rear.

Middle of the 93 model year went 24 spline. You could wind up with 10s if you get an early year model.

Yeah that's kind of what I'm thinking. Found one at a dealer, with following:

95 model, county. (don't know if swb or lwb yet)
106k miles
one owner
clean carfax
90 day full, no exceptions warranty
4900.00

But it's white, and I think that's just too bland next to Tonka's Borrego Yellow. lol.

So it's down to a 94 or 95 I guess. Got to have 24 splines. And have to have 3.9 or 4.2. No anemic 3.5 for me. Can I retrofit an lt230 easily? If I offroad it later of course...

if you are gonna off road it, I'll sell you my old classic and will save you the headaches of some of these upgrades later. mine is a '92 with the 3.9L. I have already put the LT230 in it, OME lift, ARB bumper, sliders etc... Granted it is a little rough around the edges - some dents and high miles, but its been taken care of and runs strong.

Ah, yes, I've seen the photos, and it is nice. But, have you converted it all around to 24 spline axles?

nope, thats one still on the to do list (I think). the LT230 has the later fine tooth gears, but I have not done anything to the axles myself. I did have one other rover owner speculate that to them it looked like maybe a toyota conversion had been done to it. I dont know how the hell they would know that or how I'd check.

The diff should look much different if the toyota swap was done, as should the pumpkin cover (diff face). I could be wrong though. I wouldnt worry too much about the 24 spline axle, They are very simple to convert over and too be honest the cross shaft in a stock diff will usually grenade before the axles do. You could fit later model traction control (4pin) carriers in it and then the 24 splines would be better probably, at least in the rear. The fronts neck down to 1 inch anyway so they arent really an improvement over the 10 splines. I personally prefer the good ole 10 splines, they are pretty strong for what we see in Florida. In 10 years of offroading, most of them on 33 inch tires, and the last few locked with ARBs (I did put another set of axles just in case and used my old ones for spare), I have yet to break an 10 spline. Of course, we wheel mostly mud and I dont abuse it, but they arent that bad. Gordo

Gordo; this won't see off-road at all until I get a P38a. And even then, if I keep it up, I might sell it to another enthusiast to help finance the p38, or even a MKIII Rangie. Between Tonka, and the SIIA hybrid project, I don't need another off-roader. LOL!

well, given that, mine might not be the best option. it will make a great project truck and 4 wheeler but is a little rough around the edges if you want a nice - in town truck.
