Hi,
I just got a great deal on a 1990 RR classic SWB, but unfortunately most of the dash, heater, electronics, relays and interior have been gutted and parted out. and is missing the engine, it has the tranny and transfer and all the drivetrain. it does have the fuel tank but i was going to sell it and replace it with a fuel cell and external fuel pump. I want to turn it into the work truck and offroad beater. i found a 3.9 engine for free that is in great condition that i am planning on dropping in. it has no intake setup, I was going to go carburated to simplify things. and keep the cost down. has anyone cleaned up all the wiring to simplify things, basically turn everything into a manual operation. is there anything i should watch out for? engine bay is cleaned up now, i am eliminating the cruise, ABS master cylinder, AC, and all that in the bay. the dash is going to be custom with toggle switches for the basics. is there anything i need to do to the tranny and transfercase? i think there is some wiring related to those parts. any ideas would be appreciated. also what non ABS master cylinders from other rovers will fit into this engine bay? on a budget so be kind with your ideas. cheers, Reza |

Early Range Rovers had either a Lockheed or Lucas servo/master combo. What carb setup are you looking to use? You'll need to track down an old intake manifold if you plan to use either Strombergs or SU's. If you go with a more modern carb like the Edelbrock 1404 or a Holly you'll need an Edelbrock or Offenhauser manifold.
Regarding the transmission, it wasn't until the ZF HP24 that there was anything more than sensors to be worried about. You should be on the lookout for an LT230 transfer case with a locking center diff. It's a lot more off road useable than the Borg Warner that's in there now. Keep us abreast of your work as you go along and post photos if you can. Good luck, Paul |

thanks guys,
I am looking at using an SU manigfold and carbs, i found a good one here locally for a reasonable price. i like the SU's as i am very familiar with them and have a ton of parts and they do not get any simpler. and easy to fit a snorkel to. I will start taking some pictures. --also I have the ABS speed sensors on top of the balljoints on the hubs, anything wrong with just removing them and capping off the hole with a steel or alloy plate?? -regarding the tranny, is there a sensor for the interlock i can just remove? i just saw a bunch of wires heading back that way fron the engine bay and was wondering what all its for? I am on the hunt for the transfercase, but since i already have this one it will go to use until i find a good deal. ---is there anyway to figure out a spedometer for this thing? maybe a manual cable style for this engine. or anyway to figure out the wiring to fit something else, maybe from a series rover? I am also looking at fitting a standard distributor with petronix electronic ignition?? cheers, Reza |
