Default single wire O2 sensor ?

it is my understanding the three wire sensor is pre-heated to improve response time. the white wire is the signal wire... the other (black and red )provide the heating element...so can i hook a singal wire sensor to the signal wire and forget about the pre-heater? is the pre-heater really neccessary?
