Default spline count on rrc's.....

now i am confused. i was on another forum and a member asked when did they change from 10 spline to 24 spline. i thought that LR started putting 24 splines in 1993, but he was parting out a 93 lwb that had 10 splines?? on the info at rr.net they have info that it started in 93. http://www.rangerovers.net/modelspecs/1993.html did lr start to add some 24 splines in 93 and not all the models. i looked up info at AB on diff's and they have that some 92's had 24 and some 93's had 10 splines. http://www.roverparts.com/ProductLis...imageField.y=0
anyone know or have any data. i should check my 93 owners manual when i get home, i think it would be there.
bored at work and this is bugging me.....lol

1993 is indeed the year.
There was a thread on here that had that data in it somewhere.
My 1993 LWB has 24.
I think it was a mid-year switch.

I just helped a friend switch his front on a 1993 D110 from 10 to 24 spline.

I have taken apart a number of '92's and never had one with 24 splines. I also have taken apart '93's and never had 24 splines either. I think the latest build date for a '93 was 1/93 but I can't remember for sure. This topic was discussed at great length only a few months ago. In that thread it appeared as though late winter of '93 was when the first 24 spline Range Rovers begain turning up. I also think someone said that it had more to do with the axle casing serial number than the VIN but I'd have to go back and reread the thread for any accuracy.

FWIW, I took apart a '94 SWB over a year ago. It was purchased through John Robison who has a respected shop up in Springfield, MA. It have 10 spline diffs front and rear. I was amazed. I spoke with someone at Rovers North and he said, adding further confusion to the mix, that only the LWB had 24 splines. Personally, I know that is not correct because I have taken apart other SWB's and they did have 24 spline diffs. Go figure.

You can take your pick from below, but everywhere seems to have something different in regard to which are 24 spline.

The serial number of the rear axle is stamped on the rear or top of the axle casing, on the left hand side (roughly in line with the axle breather). Serial numbers comprise a 3-figure code, identifying the axle type, followed by the serial number and then a suffix letter (A, B, C etc.).

28S axles up to 28S44171
32S axles up to 32S9121

It pays to double check anything manufactured in 1993. Was talking to my Landrover mechanic this morning about how to identify what had what. I quoted a case of where he had a 93 disco in for diff work. It was a single owner from new and the vin number had it well inside the range for 24 spline axles. When he pulled it apart he found that it had a 10 spline front diff and a 24 spline rear diff. As it was a single owner, it came from the factory in this state.
