Sunroof woes

All summer the roof has been fine, last night, i got to lower it as it was tilted up and it was raining. I looked up a few minutes later to notice it never went down. I had the stereo up loud so i hadn't noticed. I listened closely and when you hit the button the motor runs, I got it to go down, tried sliding it back, and it moves a smidge and then almost sounds like its "slipping" on the cable or something? it would probably go if i helped it but I dont want to get it stuck open so I didn't try.


Any ideas? Is it possible to get the headliner stuff off without taking the whole interior headliner out, or is that waht I'm going to have to do?

You will need to take the head liner out.
It's not that big a job. Just a few screws to hold the handles and the visors on. Remove the spare tire and pull the liner out the rear. Put it somewhere it won't get any dirtier than it already is. IE. on saw horses in the garage or something like that.

The sunroof assembly comes out with about 6 bolts if I remember correctly. You will probably need another person to help as it is a little heavy, not bad, but it's best to be safe.

IF it's slipping I'll bet you broke a gear or something. Contact your Rover spare parts supplier of your choice. I use Rover Cannibal.

I'm sorry I have never taken one completely apart but I'll bet it was made to be worked on.

Well this sounds no fun.. Who's betting I just won't have a sunroof for a year or two?

How about that, some working it back and forth and it works fine now. it would go back about halfway and stop dead like it was hitting something, and be strained at other times. i closed it 3/4 of the way , reached up in the tracks, and pulled out some plate of metal looks like from a bracket or something. now that it is out of the tracks it works fine.

Hopefully that piece of metal wasn't from something important, but I"m not going to worrya bout that unless the unit doesnt work!

Back when I had my Disco the front sunroof started leaking like mad. I took it in, and when the dealer took it apart to clean the drains the whole freaking sunroof assembly came apart. Thankfully it was still under warranty, so they put in a new one.

I asked the service manager, who's a really nice guy, what it would have cost if it wasn't in warranty. He said in the neighborhood of $1,600 or so for a new roof installed. Or he would have the tech put the broken one back in and throw in a tube of silicone sealant for free
