Default Swivel housing: grease or oil?

I bought a two bags of swivel housing grease. I haven't put them yet. What is your opinion about grease vs/ oil? How do you change? Just drain the oil and squeeze the grease in?

I have to top off swivel oil quite often, so it may be the right time to switch to grease.

But does grease have the same lubricating ability?

Any experiences?

I used grease in my D1, because the swivel balls leaked. When I got my RRC. I found grease in them, but I noticed they were not really full. I ran out of grease so I put oil in one...no leaks.... cool!

Grease in mine. No reason why you cannot put a little oil in there too if your worried about dryness though!

If you have a problem with leaky swivels then grease does make life easier. However, should you do a lot of off-roading and find yourself knee deep in water on a regular basis, grease looses its appeal. Cleaning your swivels after they've been contaminated with water and other foreign objects is a lot easier when you use oil. All you do is drain and replace. With grease, to really clean your swivels you need to disassemble them. In the end, if you have leaky swivels, fix them right and you won't have any worries. Do a half-assed fix and it will eventually get you.

My preference, oil. It's worked on Land Rovers since 1948.

If you're truck is going to see water, you should consider using grease AND oil...a 50/50 mix...this lets the filling keep its lubricating properties and allows it to be easily drainable. That way you can change it effortlessly everytime you're going to change it.

Use oil. Grease does not get into and stay in a lot of the areas. Grease + Water = Not Good.

Thanks for the opinions guys. It seems that in may case I should go for grease. Can I just drain the oil and squeeze in the grease where I normally put the oil? Or do I need to go inside and "pack" the joints?

Are there a readily available versions of the oil and/or grease? I've got a leaky swivel and am deciding which way to go.

Thanks,
Bill
