I've been informed that the right front swivel housing is losing oil at an alarming rate when my dad took the Rover in for a tire rotation before the drive to new hampshire.
I found lots of articles about the oil or grease debate and have one question is the grease something you pick up at the dealership or is it available at your local auto parts store? Has anyone done a how to on replacing the seals on the swivel housing if not has anyone done it that can offer some guidance? thanks for the help guys and gals ![]()

Replacing seals is not difficult. Undo the 2 bolts holding the brake caliper to the swivel and move it out of the way. Remove the tie rod end (and steering rod if doing the passenger side). Undo the the small bolts holding on the metal ring that holds the seal in place. Undo the 4 or 5 bolts that hold the swivel to the diff housing and slide the swivel housing (complete with axle attached) out of the diff housing. Remove old seal and slide it off over the end of the axle, slip in the new one and put it back together.

Just be ready for the weight of the hub/axle assembly. Leaky swivels are often a result of insufficient swivel bearing preload too, so even new seals will see it leak. The grease is NOT regular auto grease but a moly semi liquid grease available from AB or any of the LR parts houses. 375mm containers, 1 per side.

looks like luck may be with me maybe it seems after power washing all the grime off that the leak is coming from the flat plate that seals to the hub housing and not the swivel seal.
Still haven't decided if that is an improvement or not o well I will figure it out when she arrives on the 5th.

Dammit man, Pictures!
In any event it's "easy" to get to once you've torn it down. Have you considered replacing any of the other bits while you've got it apart? Stock up on all the lubes, when you're done there won't be any lube left in there. |
