Thumbs down Tranny? or something else?

hey guys...have some concerns about my 94LWB and need some input....here we go...vehicle had been running great with exception for what seemed to be clutch plates sticking (vehicle would wind out first for a while and then begin shifting smoothly after warm up)...then it happened...stopped at a stop sign, placed in park to look for something in console, put back into "D" and nothing...there was a light noise...not loud, not jarring...placed back into "P" and shifted again into "D"..nothing...not engaging...will roll forwards but not back. Now for the kicker...placed into "R"...it engages but will not move, like it is bound or trying to do a brake stand or something...is there anything electrical I should look at? Have placed some calls but everyone says "bring it in" which means a tow bill and I am at their mercy...I appreciate any feedback or tips...thanks a ton!

due to the lag you describe iam tempted to say tranny, something similar happened to my 87 some 3 years ago at MAR, how evr I did have reverse, that hardly ever goes as is the forward clutches that wear out, but anyhting is possible.
have you tried to disengage/engage the transfer case? it is fully engaged I would dare diagnostic as a bad trans. i did my own overhaul and still spent about 1500.00 on parts.

My tranny let go at a stop sign too... accelerated from the stop sign and I only had reverse, nothing in D/3/2/1. Replaced tranny, all is well now. Reverse with no forward is common ZF failure of A clutches...

I did move the transfer case from L to H and back again...when in neutral it acts as it should...when in both low and high the symptoms are the same...r engages and goes nowhere...bound...and all forward gears are as in neutral with exception for being able to roll forward but not back....talked to Car Cannibal...they have one at a decent price and a local tranny shop said they would do the work for $400 L....are there any things I should pick up as far as fluid...lucas additive...tranny serv kit from motorcars or Atl British....any advice appreciated....

I didn't mean do all of that and try to fix but to have it for the tech doing the install...Car Cannibal have a good rep?...I always take the workshop manual to the shop as I am having the work done so as not to have any surprises...they might not use the lucas additive traditionally.....thought it might be a good idea to have it for them or even a tranny serv kit from motoracrs ltd or Atlantic....any thoughts appreciated.

I've never had them work on anything I have.
But I've bought stuff from them and have never been treated badly.
I've been a support for them so long that they made me a shop shirt with my name on it.

When i had my tranny problems, it was rear seal, i took it to Cottmans. This is not to say anything negative about Rover Cannibal. If you want specific fluid in the tranny just tell Ryan that's what you want. He'll take care of you.

Call me nuts...but I am toying with rebuilding the A clutches in my 94's tranny myself. I won't know for sure till I yank it out this weekend. I found a UK website that has a pretty good visual step by step for the A pack removal and reinstall. Check it out: ZF 4HP22 repair / rebuild info That and I have a couple manuals that break the ZF into all it's little pieces. The "master" rebuild kit from Atlantic British is $199...not bad. I have been told by several people that rebuilding an auto tranny is not rocket science...just take your time, stay organized, and keep everything CLEAN.

What do you guys think.

If you're reasonably mechanical and have the few basic tools (large snap ring pliers/etc) and do keep things clean, it really isn't hard at all. You may want to consider a new torque convertor depending on the mileage on yours, or use it as is. Take your time and follow the directions... That said, it was easier for me to get a used unit (w/less than 10k miles on it & a new torque convertor to boot!) from Paul Grant and put that in.

My 94 only has 81k on the clock...I'll take a look at the TC, but at this point I'm not planning on replacing it (unless its bad). Is this a bad idea??
