Is there a benefit or even possible to upgrade a 1988 3.5 engine to a 14CUX ECU? Would you need the wiring harness also or any other sensor upgrades?
thanks!

It would work. But other then being able to read codes... Not much would change.

Kevin,
I remember reading an artical several years ago in one of the UK rags about this. I have heard it said that the improvements in CUX over CU (US versions) were better mapping, cleaner injector cutoff, cold start improvement (not making it start better when cold, but contolling the mixture better when cold) Without going out and looking at each, side by side, I think they are plug compatible. It will take a few start and drive cycles for the new ECU to get comfy with your sensors. Might have to fiddle with the base idle. If nothing more, I think the package is more durable. Unless one falls in your lap cheap, you're not going to recoup any big outlay of cash. |

Kevin,
I have a 14cux in my 87. Thank the previous owner. The original 13 unit is sitting underneath it, so i assume it still works, otherwise i would think it would have been thrown away. Back up maybe? Why they switched it out I have no idea because the code reader is missing on the 14 (stupid isn't it). Anyway, the plug is the same and I haven't noticed any different sensors, so yes it will work. But since I haven't plugged in the old one, I have no idea if it works any better or not.

Resurrecting this thread.
I got a good deal on a 14CUX (AMR2943) from a 92RR 4.2. Change it just to see if there is any difference from the 13CU. Few more questions: 1... Would the wiring harness from the 92 be of any benefit? What's a fair price for the harness. 2... Would any sensors need to be changed? Two in particular that I know are slightly different are the coolant temp & the TPS. 3... Do some 14CUXs not have code readers? It looks like this one does not have a place to plug one in unless it goes on to the harness plug. ![]() ![]()
